He stresses that even when the image is obscured by the elements that conceal and cover, we should simply feel that it is there and keep counting regardless. He then leads a radiation of loving-kindness expanding outward from ourselves to the boundless universe, an aspiration and request for blessings from the Triple Gem and the teachers, and closes with a dedication of merit.
Phra Ajarn Suraphong taught that connecting our stream of merit and treasure to the Triple Gem, to Nirvana, and to the great revered teachers is something we must learn and train ourselves to become accustomed to, throughout life. Each individual good deed lets merit flow through only briefly. Meditation practice differs -- through it we can let this stream of merit pour continuously and abundantly within us for a long, sustained time.
He explained: if we wish for merit to flow through us for five minutes, we sit for five minutes; if we wish for the stream of merit to flow through us for half an hour, we sit continuously for half an hour. The more we wish for this stream of merit and treasure, the longer we sit -- an hour, two hours -- connecting this stream of merit and treasure ever more deeply.
Sitting as a Daily Routine: Claiming the Time for the Wholesome System to Work
If we sit as a fixed daily routine, that means claiming and reserving that time -- so that at this particular time each day, side sets up the channel to bring the stream of merit and treasure flowing through, using this same time slot every day. We therefore need to adjust our lifestyle to make this a fixed routine, so that at this time each day, the stream of merit and treasure pours through continuously -- simply by doing something as simple as determining to know continuously, without lapsing. This is our role.
Every time we determine, the sphere of -- the sphere of knowing -- establishes itself. Once established, it draws energy in, because mindfulness is a clear, radiant, wholesome sphere. Every wholesome sphere can draw the stream of merit to flow through when we determine and establish it in the heart, sustaining awareness of the recitation and the visualized image of "."
Settling the Mind at the Centre of the Buddha Image: From a Tiny Sparkling Star to a Crystal Sphere
Phra Ajarn taught the specific technique for this sitting: every time we picture the centre of the Buddha image, recite "Samma Arahang," picturing a clear, radiant star at the centre of the abdomen as a crystal sphere, continuing to recite "Samma Arahang" until it brightens, continuing until it settles into a star, a sparkling star -- then begin counting: "Samma Arahang 3, Samma Arahang 4, Samma Arahang 5, Samma Arahang 6." Every time the sparkling star settles and appears, keep counting onward. As the sparkling star appears, merit will flow through into the brightness at its centre, until this star gradually grows larger, becoming a crystal sphere.
Even If You Can't See It, Feel That It's There: The Concealing Elements Are Not an Obstacle
He stressed: even if we picture the star and no visible sparkle appears, that's fine -- simply determine that we feel a sparkling star is there, as though recollecting it. Recollecting the star even when it doesn't visibly appear is fine; just keep counting. Feel that it's there, and count -- even in darkness, keep determining. When a sparkling star is present, that means it truly exists, but the elements that conceal and cover are hiding it from us. It's fine if we can't see it -- just keep counting.
He led the count phrase by phrase: "Samma Arahang 1" -- settle, a sparkling star appears, even unseen, count it. "Samma Arahang 2" -- fix upon it, a sparkling star appears, even unseen, count it. "Samma Arahang 3" -- settle, a sparkling star appears, even unseen, count it. "Samma Arahang 4" -- fix at the centre of the body, a sparkling star appears, even unseen, count it. Merit will flow in to cleanse away the concealing elements, and we will gradually begin to see the sparkling star, until it appears continuously. From a sparkling star it becomes a small, clear point; that small clear point gradually grows larger and larger, becoming a clear sphere. Keep doing this, and the clarity will gradually grow, brighten, and expand on its own.
Counting "Samma Arahang" Alongside the Star Image
He taught that simply by not abandoning our determination, the concealing elements pose no real obstacle -- if we understand this. When we determine on a sparkling star, the star can appear, but because the concealing elements are hiding it, we don't see it. That's fine -- simply feeling that it's there is enough. Keep feeling that it's there continuously, settling, reciting "Samma Arahang," fixing on the sparkling star. Even without seeing it, keep reciting "Samma Arahang" onward, but we must determine and fix upon the feeling that it is there. When we determine and fix upon that feeling, the corresponding reality inside will align with it -- the inner wholesome system works in tandem with us continuously. It knows we can't see, yet however we determine, it will make it become . We keep reinforcing this determination again and again; every time we determine, merit flows through continuously, refining and eliminating the tarnishing defilement, making it lighter.
In this recitation of "Samma Arahang," determine with a clear, open, spacious, light, and comfortable heart, doing it pleasantly and at ease, to receive the stream of merit. All we need to do is determine to know; once the sphere of knowing is established, our role is simply to determine to know continuously, without lapsing, knowing what we are aware of right now. The sphere of knowing then establishes itself; once established, the sphere of not-knowing -- the sphere of -- falls away. This sphere of knowing that has been established is the sphere of mindfulness, taking the form of a clear, radiant orb; once established, it draws in the pure, clear, radiant energy called merit, pouring continuously into the centre of our body and heart.
The Stream of Merit: The Coffee-Straw Bubble Analogy
He compared it to dipping a coffee straw into water and blowing through it, producing bubbles -- something similar rises continuously through the centre of our body, sphere after sphere. Within each sphere of merit lies pure, sacred -elements, possessing power and majesty capable of dissolving away suffering, grief, illness, and danger entirely. Not only that -- at the centre of the sphere of merit there are also treasures of form, wealth, , retinue, gain, honour, praise and , the paths and fruits of liberation, and the of the kaya, all complete and abundant within the sphere of merit. When merit flows through us, that means subtle treasure flows through us as well, and this subtle treasure is precisely what draws worldly, coarse treasure toward us.
He stressed that this determination must be done lightly and comfortably, without rushing, because it is the most important role in beginning to connect with the wholesome system -- relying on determining to know the state of the meditation subject, or whatever state appears before us in each present moment, knowing continuously without lapsing, reciting with a relaxed, light, comfortable, pleasant heart, on and on. Whatever feels too difficult, let it go; do only what feels easy and manageable, pleasantly, continuously. All we need is for the sphere of knowing -- the sphere of mindfulness -- to be established: knowing what we are aware of, knowing continuously without lapsing.
Radiating Loving-Kindness: From Ourselves to the Boundless Universe
Once the heart is still, soft, and light, Phra Ajarn led us to recollect (metta). As we recollect loving-kindness, it appears radiant and bright at the centre of the heart. Once loving-kindness appears, it manifests its own quality -- overflowing with love and goodwill, expanding to fill the heart: may I be happy and free from all suffering, and may all beings be free from suffering and find happiness.
Having established this wish, we expand this heart filled with loving-kindness to our relatives, friends, and fellow practitioners: may you all be happy and free from all suffering. Then we expand it further to encompass this place of practice: may all who come to practice here, the staff, and all beings be free from suffering and find happiness, everyone alike.
Then we expand this heart filled with loving-kindness ever wider, to encompass the whole region, extending to the sub-district, the district, the province, until it encompasses the whole of Thailand: may those within Thailand and all beings be happy and free from all suffering. Then expand further to neighbouring countries, and onward to all nations, until it encompasses the entire world -- let this world become a crystal world, radiant, clear, cool, clean, and pure. May the earth-bound devas, the sky devas, the celestial beings of every heavenly realm, the Brahma gods, and also the beings in hell, the hungry ghosts, the asuras, and the animals -- may all beings be free from suffering and find happiness, everyone alike. For those with much suffering, may their suffering lessen; for those with little suffering, may it end entirely and happiness arise; for those with little happiness, may it increase; and for those already abundant in happiness, may it grow ever greater still.
Having established this wish, we expand this heart filled with loving-kindness outward into the vastness of the cosmos, encompassing the countless stars, great and small, and onward into the boundless universe of world-systems -- let our loving-kindness shine and benefit all beings, all things, and all elements of existence, radiant, clear, cool, clean, and pure. Gather the heart at the centre of this brightness of loving-kindness; the stream of merit pours continuously through the centre of this brightness of loving-kindness, extending this pure merit to benefit all beings, all things, and all elements without limit.
Aspiration and Requesting Blessings from the Triple Gem and the Teachers
Resting still at the centre of this brightness of the continuously pouring stream of merit, he led us to settle at the centre of the Buddha Jewel, the centre of the Dhamma Jewel, the centre of the Sangha Jewel, the centre of the revered teachers, the centre of our late revered grand-teachers and teachers. As all of them shine radiantly at the centre of ourselves and of them together, we settle at the centre of Nirvana, the centre of the all-knowing ones of boundless power.
He led an aspiration requesting blessings from every Fully Enlightened Buddha, every Silent Buddha, and every Noble Disciple, that our aspiration bear fruit both now and in every future existence, throughout the countless lifetimes along the path of accumulating perfections -- that we be complete and whole with knowledge paired with happiness and , and success in every right and good aspiration. He asked for the blessing, the merit, the radiance, the power and might of Nirvana throughout every element and every dhamma, and also for the blessing of the Dhamma of our late revered grand-teachers and teachers.
Forgiveness of Past Karma, and a Request for Old Merit to Bear Fruit Now
He led a request that all this merit and blessing gather together with the merit we have diligently accumulated since our very first existence, through countless lifetimes, combining into a sacred merit of great power, majesty, and boundless might. May our body, speech, mind, elements of being, and consciousness be radiant, clear, cool, clean, and pure. May we be freed from misfortune, sin, the results of past karma, obstacles and hindrances of every kind in life -- may they dissolve and vanish entirely. May greed, aversion, delusion, lust, ignorance, wrong view, craving, and clinging be extinguished without remainder. May we gain the eye that sees the Dhamma, reaching and becoming fully proficient in the knowledge of the Dhammakaya.
He led a request that any unwholesome deed committed in error in the past, since our very first existence through countless lifetimes, may never catch up with us or have the opportunity to bear its fruit -- may it be forgiven forever, and may we commit no new wrongdoing through body, speech, or mind. As for whatever merit we have diligently accumulated and built, may it all combine and bear fruit with sacred power, majesty, and wondrous might, bearing fruit continuously from this moment onward until we reach the ultimate end of the Dhamma.
The Aspiration to Be Born into a Dhammakaya Family and Realize the Knowledge of the Dhammakaya
He continued the aspiration: may we have strong and complete health, a long life in which to accumulate merit and perfections throughout our lifetime, with unending high spirits in building perfections directed straight toward the path of Nirvana. Wherever we travel, may we meet only good fortune and safety, be beloved by humans and devas alike, possess radiant wisdom that thoroughly understands the Dhamma of the Fully Enlightened Buddha and the knowledge of the Dhammakaya. Whatever business or work we undertake, may it prosper and advance, yielding great treasure to build perfections with full strength and without .
And when the time comes to leave this world, he led the aspiration that we be born in the Dusita heaven of special merit, in the region of the Bodhisattvas, and when we return to build perfections in the human world, that we be born into a family of right view, a crystal family, a Dhammakaya family, a model family for the world, a warm family, complete with the utmost treasures of form, wealth, virtue, gain, honour, praise and happiness, the paths and fruits of liberation, and the knowledge of the Dhammakaya. May we possess a vast and sacred sphere of merit, able to recall past lives from the moment of birth, born together with a clear, radiant Dhammakaya within, and study the knowledge of the Dhammakaya correctly and authentically with our grand-teachers and teachers from childhood until the end of our life.
He closed the aspiration: may all these good and beautiful wishes come to fruition for all of us, from this moment onward, in every existence and every lifetime until we reach the ultimate end of the Dhamma, through the boundless power of every Fully Enlightened Buddha. May every aspiration be fulfilled. Sadhu.
