ความละเอียดของกาลเวลา: เมื่อผู้อื่นรับรู้เร็วกว่าเรา เขาก็ซ้อนความคิดความรู้สึกเข้ามาโดยไม่รู้ตัวThe Fineness of Time: When Another Party Perceives Faster Than Us, They Can Overlay Their Thoughts on Ours Unnoticed
Phra Ajarn Suraphong explains that our perception, though it feels continuous, actually contains tiny gaps between fractions of a second — and that a party whose perceptual resolution is finer than ours, even by a hundredth or a thousandth of a second, can overlay their own thoughts and feelings onto our mind without our ever noticing. He teaches that we must train determined knowing to sharpen our own resolution, before leading a full guided sit.
Life Should Progress Toward Freedom From Suffering
Practicing is the most important thing in life — we are born for exactly this purpose. Life should progress toward freedom from suffering and toward a truly wondrous existence. But for life to be free of hardship and suffering, we need to learn how to draw in pure energy to purify the defilement that creates the problems and obstacles behind our suffering. Drawing in this pure energy can be done with eyes open or closed — simply by determining to be aware of ourselves.
The Buddha's Teaching: Clear Knowing of Body, Feeling, Mind, Dhamma Comes Before Clear Seeing
As the Buddha taught the Sangha: "Monks should clearly discern body, feeling, mind, and dhamma, in order to purify craving and aversion toward the world." He taught that we must determine our knowing — it cannot simply arise on its own; it must be determined. Clear knowing requires (). Clear seeing and clear knowing are different: clear seeing requires an inner light, while clear knowing only requires purifying that disturb us. At the start we don't yet have that inner light for clear seeing, so clear knowing comes first, resting on — recollection, being aware — knowing only the general topic. Knowing in fine detail, knowing all the subtle states, knowing thoroughly in every dhamma, requires clear comprehension — but mindfulness must always be trained first.
Mindfulness Always Arises Together With the Wholesome Mind — Otherwise the Unwholesome or Neutral Rules Instead
Mindfulness is a dhamma that always arises together with mind. Whenever the wholesome mind is established, the wholesome system is established, and mindfulness arises with it. So if we do not determine our mindfulness, it means the wholesome system has not been established, and we are instead abiding with the neutral or . We must understand this clearly, or else we will assume we are determining our knowing, recollecting all day long, when we are not. To abide with mindfulness is to abide with the wholesome system — we must know always without lapsing, aware of our own body, aware within our meditation object.
The Fineness of Time: The Gaps Hidden Within Every Tenth of a Second
Knowing that arises through determined mindfulness is clear knowing — it becomes self-evidently clear what we are knowing right now, and we become master of ourselves, with self-mastery arising. But if we merely know in the ordinary, everyday way we go about life, that is a deceptive kind of knowing, circling through the fine texture of time, from one moment to the next. Though these moments seem close together, once we examine the actual timeline of time itself, gaps exist between them. This is exactly where opposing forces seize control at a level far finer than ours — while we operate at the level of a tenth of a second to the next tenth of a second, they operate down to a hundredth, a thousandth, a hundred-thousandth, even a millionth of a second. Whoever operates with finer resolution, with greater precision, can draw in pure energy more effectively than we can.
When Others Are Finer Than Us: Overlaying Thought and Feeling Without Our Knowing
This means they can secretly become ruler of our heart without our awareness, drawing in energy ahead of us, achieving finer resolution than us — even while we are aware of our own body, aware of this and that, going about our activities, our perceptual resolution reaches only from one tenth of a second to the next, appearing continuous, aware of this, aware of that. Yet why can't we control ourselves? Doing good becomes difficult; determining mindfulness and wisdom becomes difficult; everything feels stuck and obstructed. This is because our resolution isn't fine enough — theirs is finer, so they can seize control of our heart's rulership at that finer rate: a hundredth of a second, a thousandth, a hundred-thousandth, a millionth of a second — drawing in their own energy. Once they reach a certain level, they gradually gain control over us, overlaying images, overlaying thoughts, overlaying feelings onto our own feelings, altering our thoughts and feelings without our ever knowing, simply because their resolution is finer than ours.
Training to Sharpen Our Own Resolution: From a Tenth of a Second to a Thousandth
This is exactly why we need to train mindfulness to become finer — developing from a tenth of a second to a twentieth, a thirtieth, a fortieth, a fiftieth, a sixtieth, a seventieth of a second, continuing on to a hundredth, several hundredths, a thousandth of a second. Even when we believe our practice is continuous, that we can determine our knowing always without lapsing, why does it happen that another force suddenly overlays itself without our noticing, altering our thoughts and feelings? It is because they are finer than us, and so can overlay us. We must therefore learn to determine our knowing always without lapsing, staying with the meditation object we have well chosen, one with a clear and continuous signal.
The Sphere of Knowing Arises, Ignorance Falls: The Wholesome Sphere Can Only Arise in the Heart
As we determine our knowing, the sphere of not-knowing — — falls away. This sphere of knowing is the sphere of mindfulness, recollection, awareness — a wholesome sphere. All 84,000 sections of the wholesome dhamma-sphere are spheres of light, and they can arise nowhere else but in the heart. Whether neutral, unwholesome, or wholesome, every dhamma can only arise in the heart — the heart is the sole place capable of receiving it. When the wholesome sphere is established in the heart, our heart becomes clear and bright, because wholesome dhamma is itself a clear, bright sphere; once established in the heart, it colors our mind and heart, making them clear and bright. The light of wholesome dhamma shines within the heart, dispelling the darkness caused by ignorance until it is gone.
The Coffee-Straw Analogy: A Continuous Stream of Merit
Not only that — this wholesome sphere also draws the pure energy called merit continuously into the center of the brightness of the sphere of knowing. It is like dipping a coffee straw into water and blowing through it: bubbles rise continuously, bright and rapid, resembling a stream of clear brightness pouring through the dhamma together with the pure merit-element — a pure brightness accompanied by and ease of mind.
The Subtle Assets Within the Sphere of Merit: What Truly Draws Wealth From the World
Within the sphere of merit is the dhamma-element itself, containing subtle assets in full abundance — form-assets, wealth-assets, -assets, retinue-assets, gain, honor, praise, happiness, the path and fruit of Nibbāna, and the of the body — all fully present within the sphere of merit. When merit flows through us, subtle assets flow through us as well, and it is these very subtle assets that draw the world's outward wealth to us. If our merit is scant, our subtle assets are scant as well.
The Stream of Merit and Dedicating Merit to Our Ancestors
As we determine our knowing always without lapsing in this way, we use this time to dedicate merit to our ancestors — parents, siblings, grandparents, the teachers who have helped us, the guardian devas who protect us, and all beings we may have wronged, our karmic counterparts (คู่กรรมคู่เวร) — asking for mutual forgiveness, that they too receive a share of this merit.
Radiating Loving-Kindness to All Beings and the Universe
Having made this wish, we extend the heart, filled with , widely outward, encompassing our home. The mind is a field of accomplishment — however we determine it, so it becomes. Mettā, which arises from the mind as its birthplace, shines to encompass every atom of the surroundings — all beings, all things, all elements alike growing bright, clean, and pure. Unlike moonlight and sunlight, which cannot penetrate every atom of people, animals, and objects and therefore cast shadows, the light of dhamma penetrates through everything without ever casting a shadow, able to dissolve defilement completely. We extend it further, across neighboring villages, sub-districts, districts, provinces, throughout Thailand and neighboring countries, until it embraces the whole world, making it a crystal world, bright, clean, and pure. May all beings — earth-dwelling devas, tree devas, sky devas, celestial beings of every heaven, brahma and formless-brahma realms, hell-beings, hungry ghosts, and animals — be free from suffering and find happiness together; may none harm one another, may there be no enmity or danger between them. We extend it still further, into the vastness of the universe, embracing countless stars throughout the ten thousand world-systems and the infinite cosmos, without limit.
Resting in the Triple Gem and the Closing Aspiration
We rest the mind, still, in the center of the Triple Gem — the Buddha jewel, the jewel, the Sangha jewel — which shines bright within us, in the center of the great teachers who watch over our merit and Dhamma at all times, resting in the center of Nibbāna, in the center of every Buddha, every Paccekabuddha, and every Arahant, replete with wisdom, , and great compassion. They take our seeing, remembering, thinking, knowing, and our earth, water, wind, fire, space, and consciousness elements, and refine them to clarity and purity. They also connect us to a lineage of merit and fortune. Using this most auspicious moment, we make an aspiration, setting a blueprint for success now and in every life to come, along our entire path of building perfections, for knowledge, happiness, purity, and the fulfillment of every righteous wish, closing with a Pali chant of dedication.
