สมาธิช่วยโรคซึมเศร้าได้อย่างไร และเหตุใดศาสนาพุทธอยู่ได้ด้วยการให้?How Does Meditation Help with Depression, and Why Does Buddhism Endure Through Giving?
Pra Ajarn offers encouragement after hearing about world figures and a youth healing camp that use meditation and the Buddha's teachings to help people with depression and panic. He then expands on a teaching from Luang Pu of Wat Paknam explaining why Thailand alone escaped being colonized — because Buddhism there continues to flourish through the giving of its people.
Someone shared accounts of world-renowned business figures and a youth healing camp that use meditation and the Buddha's teachings to help people suffering from depression and panic, and asked for Pra Ajarn's thoughts, before going on to ask about a teaching by Luang Pu of Wat Paknam concerning Buddhism and Thailand's independence.
Meditation and the Buddha's Teachings Truly Heal the Mind
It was shared that several world-renowned businesspeople have said that regular meditation is one of the secrets of their success — it calms the mind and opens the way to the and wisdom needed to solve problems. It was also shared that a youth healing camp applies the Buddha's teachings to help those facing depression and panic, guiding them to understand the roots of their struggles and giving them a safe environment among friends who truly understand — with many finding genuine recovery. Pra Ajarn agreed this was heartening, an encouragement to practitioners that what we do daily truly works, and a good direction worth extending to reach more young people in the future.
Why Thailand Alone Escaped Colonization
Someone then asked Pra Ajarn to expand on a teaching by Luang Pu of Wat Paknam on this very point: "This kind of giving is exactly what follows in the footsteps of the Buddha and the Arahants. While the Buddha and the Arahants lived, this kind of giving existed, and that is why the religion flourished. Without giving of this kind, it cannot flourish. When you give prosperity to Buddhism, that prosperity turns back toward yourself — giving prosperity to Buddhism is, in truth, giving prosperity to yourself." Luang Pu explained that for those who come together to make offerings, whether as sponsors or as a group, the Buddha watches over them, sending his knowing awareness to see how much or suffering they experience, and helps relieve their suffering and increase their well-being all the more. In Thailand, Buddhism genuinely still exists; even though it has declined throughout the rest of the Indian subcontinent, it remains strong only in Thailand. And it is remarkable indeed that Thailand remained independent, despite having no warships or artillery to fight anyone off — it stayed independent because of Buddhism, because the Buddha himself watched over and protected it. This differed from the religion in Cambodia under French rule at the time, where there was widespread violation of precepts, , and monastic discipline.
Pra Ajarn added that this depends on the nation's leadership. When the Thai monarchy served as leader and relied on Buddhism as a way of life, giving it a position of honor and continually maintaining and protecting it, merit naturally arose for that leadership. When a leader remains within system, that system in turn ensures that what is hoped for comes to pass. In some other countries, even where Buddhism was present, the accumulated karma of the people at that time was heavy, causing leaders to neglect the care of Buddhism, lacking the capacity to protect it, which led to oppression and contempt toward it. This karmic weight prevented them from remaining within the wholesome system; and once outside it, either the neutral or system took over instead. Once in control, that system offers neither true suffering nor true happiness, or brings suffering and danger, or simply wastes time without benefit — and the results follow accordingly. Without the wholesome system in place, true prosperity is simply impossible.
