Someone shares the teaching of a successful speaker on “the inner world creates the outer world” and training the mind toward positive emotion; Pra Ajarn explains how this aligns with the inner mechanics of wholesome and unwholesome dhamma, and answers whether money from an unclean source carries misfortune into a donation.

Someone recounted the story of a successful speaker and businessman, once a musician, who turned to teaching marketing and self-development, centered on the principle that "everything is created from within, 100%" — nothing is accidental, and everything that appears outwardly is the result of what has been accumulated within. This teacher advises against consuming disruptive media first thing in the morning, practicing gratitude for small things before starting the day, and meditating so the brainwaves and heart rhythms work in harmony, which calms the mind, cultivates positive emotion, and makes it easier to draw good things into one's life. The asker requested Pra Ajarn's explanation of how this teaching aligns with the .

The Mechanics of Good and Bad Emotional States in the Dhamma

As a matter of principle, whenever we dwell in the tools of side — boredom, gloom, weariness, stress, irritation, exhaustion, discouragement, hopelessness, despondency, restlessness, resentment, greed, aversion, delusion — these emotions trap us within their own dimension, stripping us of freedom, because the unwholesome side uses them as tools overlaid on the mind to draw in unwholesome energy along with karmic misfortune that destroys our wellbeing. Conversely, feelings of relaxation, openness, spaciousness, ease, fullness, cheerfulness, freshness, gentleness, delicacy, and tenderness are all states of wholesome , which side uses as tools to draw in pure energy along with refined qualities. We must therefore sustain wholesome emotional states continuously, so that pure energy can purify defilements — problems and obstacles diminish, and freedom increases. The deeper and subtler the dimension we reach, the greater the pure energy drawn in; and the more refined qualities we gain, the more they in turn draw coarser, worldly wealth as well. This is exactly why training the mind to dwell in positive emotion genuinely affects outward success.

Hearing teachings from multiple perspectives — even on truths we already understand within the Dhamma — is valuable, because it reinforces our understanding and makes it firmer, prompting us to reflect more deeply on what we already knew. This speeds up and completes the drawing-in of pure energy. Anyone able to explain these principles in a way ordinary people can grasp — whether through scientific framing or any other language — helps draw people toward understanding life's truth, which is of great benefit. We shouldn't close ourselves off from hearing good perspectives from others.

Does Money From an Unclean Source Carry Misfortune Into a Donation?

Someone asked: if someone takes money obtained from a somewhat unclean source, such as lottery winnings, and donates it to a monk, does that offering carry misfortune with it? What effect does receiving such money have on a monk who doesn't know its origin, and what is the correct way for a monk to handle this?

Wealth itself carries no wrongdoing — wealth is simply wealth. Misfortune arises only when the mind of the person who obtained that wealth was possessed by the unwholesome side, acting out of greed to obtain it through improper means. Once that act is completed, the person accrues an accomplished sphere of sin, carrying energy of suffering and misfortune that will bear fruit in the future, and it also makes their mind more accustomed to the unwholesome side, increasing the likelihood of repeating such wrongdoing. But this concerns the person who acted — not the wealth itself. Once that wealth is offered to a monk or given to anyone else, it remains beneficial as wealth always is, and the recipient is unaffected — just as a shopkeeper selling goods to anyone bears no responsibility for where the buyer's money came from. If a monk happens to know the source of such wealth, he should offer guidance as the giver is able to receive it, pointing out the harm that will come to them, so they won't repeat such unwholesome acts — but he should not encourage or support the wrongdoing further.
