Pra Ajarn expands on Luang Phor's teaching about a mind wrapped in delusion, explains how meditation cures it, and answers questions on the difference between chanting and sitting meditation, and the value of Dhamma songs.

Someone asked: please expand on Luang Phor's teaching that "a mind wrapped in delusion (moha) makes it blind, unable to see why we were born or what life's purpose is; with enough meditation, delusion falls away and the mind brightens, coming to know life's purpose and how to reach it, becoming bright, pure, happy, mindful, wise, and bold enough to think, speak, and act only in good ways."

How Meditation Cures Delusion

Meditation consists of and . Right comes first; once the mind is established, it enters the inner states of layer by layer, through countless dimensions, each of which still contains some defilement. The subtler the dimension we reach, the lighter the defilement, and the greater our capacity to draw in pure energy. Right concentration in turn consists of calm (), which stills the mind and suppresses sensual desire, and (), which gives rise to wisdom capable of resolving problems. Whenever we wish to be free from something, the "sphere of liberation" present in every body works to free us, and the "sphere of -and-vision of liberation" leads us into subtler, more refined states.

Mind is the state of awareness within a plane of existence. Even while we remain in the human plane, in this very moment of listening to or practicing dhamma, we exist within a plane of dhamma layered over the ordinary one. Our present inner being is a wholesome one that has arisen. Conversely, when the mind dwells within system, the corresponding inner being is unwholesome — whether of a hell being, an asura, or an animal. All such minds are wrapped in delusion, composed of ( — not truly knowing) and wrong view (miccha-ditthi). These two are the tools of delusion that blind the mind, hiding life's purpose from view, because the unwholesome inner being dictates our thoughts — we believe we're thinking for ourselves, when in fact it's the overlaid thinking of that inner being.

Breaking free from this control requires meditation, to establish a wholesome mind. When mind arises, the Triple Gem shines brightly at our center; mindfulness arises together with the wholesome mind; the brightness of the 84,000 sections of the appears in the heart. This wholesome dhamma draws in pure energy to purify defilements. But because the contest for control is constant, we must cooperate with the wholesome side by meditating continuously — the more we can sustain it, the stronger the wholesome side becomes. Inner and outer sources of wisdom then guide us toward a correct life purpose, and the mind grows bright, pure, happy, wise, and bold enough to think, speak, and act only in good ways.

Chanting Is Like Ointment, Meditation Is Like Medicine Taken Internally — Why?

Someone asked: why did Khun Yai compare chanting to ointment applied externally, and meditation to medicine taken internally?

Human beings are inherently prone to suffering, because whenever the unwholesome side seizes control of the mind, it brings suffering and forces us into behaviors it dictates. Yet most people can only sustain meditation for a few minutes. Chanting is therefore a helpful alternative, since it relies on sound — words carefully composed by those who understood the dhamma, so that the wholesome system and nibbana can overlay us while we chant. But because spoken chanting is still coarser and less refined than meditation, there are more openings for the unwholesome side to intrude. While chanting can ease suffering to some degree, truly entering the deeper, subtler dimensions requires meditation, which travels directly into the inner dimensions and purifies defilements there more thoroughly. So when someone is suffering greatly, we should encourage them to both chant and sit in meditation.

Do Dhamma Songs Give a Different Result Than Chanted Verses?

Someone asked: does singing the Dhamma songs Luang Phor composed give more or less benefit than chanting?

The songs Luang Phor composed carry dhamma in every word; each good word holds the quality of that dhamma within it. When sung or held in the heart, that word expresses its quality to the mind — just as water becomes sweet with sugar added, or salty with salt. Words are waves, and good waves draw in good energy. In the same way, during the Buddha's time, the wise arranged teachings into verse with melody so they could be remembered and applied easily. Dhamma songs therefore carry no less value than chanted verses.
