ใครมารับเราไว้เมื่อหลับตา: ความแจ่มแจ้งของฝ่ายกุศล กับความงุนงงของฝ่ายอกุศลWho Receives Us When We Close Our Eyes: The Clarity of the Wholesome, the Confusion of the Unwholesome
Phra Ajarn Suraphong teaches that as we refine our awareness moment by moment through knowing the body, the wholesome side gains ground more often, fraction of a second by fraction of a second. And in the instant we close our eyes and step into the inner dimension, one force or another is always there first to receive us: if the wholesome side receives us, we feel clear, spacious, and at ease; if the unwholesome side does, we feel dazed, groggy, and confused. He advises practicing going in and out repeatedly until we can control the inner situation.
Refining the Gaps in Time Through Knowing the Body
Phra Ajarn Suraphong has us bring the mind to rest in the body first, before closing the eyes — because closing them before we're ready sends us straight into a dark inner dimension. First become ready to some degree: keep the eyes open and know the body, so system can establish itself and draw in energy to clear away the coarse defilement accumulated since morning.
Before we settle into body-awareness, our knowing comes in disconnected bursts; in the gaps between, memory and habit carry us along, and and unwholesome forces compete for that gap in time. Once we settle into body-awareness, that gap gets divided into finer and finer slices — our knowing becomes more continuous, giving the wholesome side more opportunity to carry through those gaps, and refinement arises. The more often we cultivate , the finer the wholesome side's foothold becomes, the more energy gets drawn in, and the more defilement gets cleared — meaning we can enter increasingly subtle dimensions, freed more and more from the coarse layer.
Who Receives Us When We Close Our Eyes: Clarity from the Wholesome, Confusion from the Unwholesome
Before closing the eyes, check whether we're aware of the breath — in and out. It's easier to start with the eyes open. When the eyes tire and we want to close them, it's strange: all day long with the eyes open we felt no strain at all, yet the moment we sit to meditate, we suddenly rush to close them — and once closed, everything goes dark.
**This is exactly where Phra Ajarn Suraphong draws a crucial distinction.** If, upon entering the inner dimension, we find it clear and we know all at once like this, that's a good sign — the wholesome side was there waiting to receive us. Entering and immediately knowing the whole body clearly, able to settle right into our meditation object — this tells us the wholesome side has met us. We know instantly which side received us the moment we arrive. **If the wholesome side receives us, entering the inner world brings full clarity, complete , and a sense of spaciousness and ease. But if side receives us, we feel dazed, groggy, drowsy, and confused.**
If, on entering, we feel muddled and groggy, that is drawing us into the unwholesome dimension — an old groove of habit carrying us along its own track. But if we enter and find clarity, knowing everything at once, that tells us the wholesome side was waiting to receive us.
Practicing In and Out Repeatedly Until We Master the Inner Situation
Turn toward the meditation object, know it clearly, use the verbal recitation together with the mental image to help. If we can't sustain it, if effort alone won't carry us further, open the eyes and step back out of the inner world; re-establish mindfulness with the eyes open for a while, then go back in. Repeat this pattern. If we open our eyes because we can't manage the situation, re-establish clear mindfulness, then re-enter. Practicing this in-and-out repeatedly, we gradually gain complete mastery over the inner situation — like a national leader who, facing political opposition, cannot govern effectively without engaging directly. We are the ruler of this realm of body and mind; as long as we neglect our own realm, wandering after the outer world instead of attending to it, we won't know how formidable our opponent really is until we face it directly.
When closing the eyes, let the eyelashes just touch, letting a little light through — the felt sense rests between the inner and outer worlds, then shifts inward around the belly, moving in about a hand's width to . Set a marker there — a crystal Buddha image or crystal sphere. Whether it is vivid or faint is not the point; we only need enough sense of its location. Even if we don't see it, feeling that it's there is enough. Vividness or vagueness is a matter of defilement — heavy defilement makes clarity difficult. Don't strain to force clarity until the head aches; keep it comfortable, just enough to serve as a resting point for awareness.
Increasing Refinement, Fraction of a Second by Fraction of a Second
If we stay continuously aware without lapsing, the connection between one moment the wholesome side gains ground and the next becomes increasingly seamless. The wholesome side can govern body and mind with increasing precision, down to a tenth, a hundredth, a thousandth of a second. This means pure energy gets drawn in during every fraction of a second the wholesome side manages to take the lead, continuously clearing the defilement that manifests as the many forms of hindrance.
Whether reciting "" — staying anchored to each syllable — or resting on the mental image, stay aware without lapsing. Our great teacher taught that verbal recitation and mental image go together as a pair. Uttering the name "Samma Arahang," the verbal representation of the Buddha jewel, causes him to appear, complete with supreme wisdom, absolute , and boundless compassion, expanding to merge as one with our mind and body. Our head becomes a clear crystal of the kaya, crowned with a lotus-bud finial (เกตุดอกบัวตูม), radiant, refined, soft and gentle. From head to toe we become the crystal Buddha image, luminous and pure. We are the Buddha image; the Buddha image is us. Set aside every ordinary human sense of self, leaving only the felt truth that we are this image.
The Triple Gem Never Ceases to Help Us
The Triple Gem works to correct and help us continuously, every fraction of a second, without pause — whether we are asleep, awake, standing, walking, sitting, or lying down, refining the elements within us to be clean and pure at all times. It is only our own mistaken living — accepting the unwholesome and the indeterminate — that brings suffering and harm upon ourselves, letting them overlay us until obstruction and defilement accumulate without our knowing it. This is why, every evening when we chant and pay respects, we invite this presence to merge with us as one, so it can work more effectively to help and correct us — through cultivating right mindfulness, knowing the body, or resting continuously on our chosen meditation object, whether our eyes are open or closed.
Radiating Loving-Kindness to All Beings
Once the stream of merit is flowing continuously within us, dedicate this merit to our ancestors — parents, siblings, grandparents, teachers who have helped us, guardian spirits, caretakers, and all beings we may have wronged, our karmic counterparties (คู่กรรมคู่เวร) — asking mutual forgiveness so all may share equally in this merit.
Set the wholesome intention that all beings who share the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death be free from suffering and find . Extend this heart full of to cover our home. This loving-kindness, born from the heart, shines through every atom of the surrounding air; all beings and things become luminous, clean, and pure through its special quality of dissolving resentment and irritation. Extend it to the village, sub-district, district, province, Thailand and its neighbors, until it covers the whole world, turning it into a crystal world — bright, cool, clean, and pure. May the devas, tree spirits, sky spirits, heavenly beings of every realm, the form and formless Brahma gods, and all beings including hell-beings, hungry ghosts, and animals, be free from suffering and find happiness.
Dedicating the Heart and Setting the Blueprint for Success
Extend loving-kindness without limit into the vastness of the cosmos, as the stream of merit pours through its center. Gather the mind, resting still at the center of the most refined Dhamma body of our great teachers, at the center of the boundless Nibbana, at the center of the all-capable presence without limit.
Using this auspicious moment, set an intention — a blueprint for success — that our whole path of building perfections be filled with , happiness, purity, and the fulfillment of every good and rightful wish. May we be freed from calamity, karmic obstruction, and every hardship; may greed, hatred, delusion, craving, wrong view, and clinging be extinguished without remainder; may we gain the eye of Dhamma, reach the Dhammakaya, enjoy good health, and carry unfailing resolve toward the path to Nibbana; and in whatever life comes next, may we be born where building perfections continues freely. The session closes with a chant invoking the protection and blessing of the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha.
