Pra Ajarn explains how the three natures take turns ruling the heart, and that releasing old wounds requires a good friend in dhamma to lead the mind back into the wholesome system. He also explains why disturbing visions ('karma-signs') tend to surface right as we try to sleep, and why we must keep training to use the inner tools of morality, concentration, wisdom, and liberation.
Someone raised a story from an interview they had heard: a person from a well-off family who, as a child, was sent abroad and felt unloved by their parents, later rebelling — neglecting schoolwork, falling into addiction, and living recklessly. The question: in Buddhist terms, how does one release the knots of a painful past? And why do disturbing visions (karma-signs) tend to appear specifically as one is about to fall asleep, even though one's time to depart this life hasn't yet come?
The Three Natures Take Turns Ruling the Heart
Pra Ajarn explained that our lives are governed by three natures — wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral — each constantly competing to become 'master of the house' of the heart. When side wins, it programs our thoughts, speech, and actions toward what is right and good. When side wins, it forces us to act out its program in order to draw in more unwholesome karma. Every completed action, whichever side drove it, gets sealed as a 'success template' stored within the sphere of , waiting to open at the right point on our life's timeline. The person in this story is no different. When the cycle of past unwholesome karma comes due, the inner voice distorts information and steers us toward company that enables more wrongdoing — and the more wealth one has, the more that wealth can enable self-destruction.
How to Release the Knots of the Past
There is only one way to release these knots: to abide in the wholesome system. A in dhamma is the first thing needed to lead such a person to someone who can help them develop right view, freeing them from the wrong view that causes suffering. As the unwholesome cycle wanes, the wholesome side gains enough strength to point out benefit and harm, inspiring the person to recognize their situation and find an opening to break free. The sphere of liberation, already present in every human body, works to free us from what is unwholesome; the sphere of the -and-vision of liberation then helps us reach toward the good things we aspire to.
Why Karma-Signs Appear as We're Falling Asleep
Pra Ajarn explained that as we fall asleep, the mind must return to its resting base. But if a person has repeatedly fed the mind with unwholesome deeds until defilements have built up heavily, the unwholesome side — which currently rules the heart — won't easily let the mind settle into that base. Instead it releases disturbing images and sounds to prevent sleep. The remedy is to sit in meditation before lying down rather than lying flat right away: hold the meditation object, let the Triple Gem shine bright within, and let it refine away the clouding defilements — sleep will then come naturally after a while. As for karma-signs that appear in the truly final moments of life, these arise when the 'death-sphere' gives its full result, replaying past events to lock the mind in place and draw in whichever karma — good or bad — has been practiced most habitually.
The Importance of Training to Use Our Inner Tools
Pra Ajarn added that we already carry, within the human body, the tools of the sphere of dhamma — morality, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and knowledge-and-vision of liberation. Even without seeing these spheres, we can still use them, just as a blind person can use household objects without seeing them. What matters is clearly forming the intention of what unwholesome quality we wish to be freed from — only then will the sphere of liberation activate to help us.
