เสียบปลั๊กไฟ: อุปมาว่าด้วยดวงรู้ที่เชื่อมกับพลังงานบริสุทธิ์ทันทีที่ตั้งขึ้นPlugging into an Outlet: The Instant the Knowing Orb Connects to Pure Energy
Phra Ajarn Suraphong compares the knowing orb arising in the mind to plugging into an electrical outlet: the instant the plug goes in, pure energy is drawn in automatically — no waiting, no extra effort required. The moment the knowing orb arises, the connection is already made.
He opens by stressing that in meditation, must come first. Keep the eyes open and establish right before anything else, because if we close our eyes immediately without being used to the inner world, the sudden darkness lets work easily, and confusion and grogginess arise. It takes time to find footing. Someone already familiar with their own practice can settle into it directly, but for those not yet used to it, first establish clear awareness with eyes open — aware of the whole body along with recollection, even aware of one's own thoughts.
See Clearly with Eyes Open, Then Close Them
Once awareness is clear and steady with eyes open, gently let the eyelids come down, just enough for light to pass through — never sealed into darkness. If it turns fully dark, ignorance will imprison us, leaving us dazed and drifting until we slip into sleep. During this stage we remain balanced between outer and inner. Shift the mind from the belly's surface inward, less than a hand's width, to reach the marker of the Buddha image or crystal orb. It need not be clear — only some part of it, enough for the knowing orb to hold onto.
Clarity Arrives on Its Own as Defilement Lightens
He stresses we don't directly need clarity, because everything in the inner world must happen "on its own" — we cannot force it into being this way or that. Forcing it to match our will is side commanding us, making the mind stubborn. We only need some part of the Buddha image or crystal orb as a marker; as defilement lightens, clarity will appear on its own in due course.
Choosing a Practice with Clear, Continuous Signal
For the knowing orb to arise, it needs something to hold onto. We must therefore choose a familiar practice with a clear, continuous signal. There are as many as forty types of meditation objects; the key principle is choosing one that, once used, doesn't get forgotten or lost — clear and continuous. Once the knowing orb has a practice to hold onto, it can sustain itself, and it will draw the pure energy called merit to flow into the center of its own brightness.
The Simile: Plugging into an Electrical Outlet
This is tonight's central teaching. He explains that every time the knowing orb arises, even momentarily, it's like plugging into an electrical outlet. The instant the plug goes in, pure energy is drawn into us, into our mind, immediately — no waiting, no extra steps required. The knowing orb can only arise in one place: the mind. When mindfulness arises there, the knowing orb continuously draws in pure energy for us to use. It then automatically takes on the work of cleansing all the defilements.
He stresses that this drawing-in must be continuous, because drawing in only a little isn't enough to overcome the substantial defilement present. It's like a plug that keeps slipping out — the current becomes intermittent. We must sustain unbroken awareness to keep the "plug" seated at all times, letting pure energy flow in to cleanse defilement until it's gone.
Each Part Has Its Own Distinct Role
He explains that each element has its own role: our role is to be aware; the knowing orb's role is to draw in pure energy; pure energy's role is to cleanse defilement; the meditation object's role is to give the knowing orb something to hold onto. We shouldn't overstep into roles we cannot fulfill — trying to cleanse defilement ourselves is impossible, since we lack the and ability, and don't even know where the defilement lies. Our only task is to sustain the knowing orb.
The Automatic System of Wholesome Dhamma
Compare this to the body's automatic systems — liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, heart — each performing its specific, interconnected function to sustain life. The mind works the same way. There's a part we must manage ourselves — choosing the meditation object — while the rest of the mechanism runs automatically, with the Triple Gem overseeing automatic system.
The 84,000 Wholesome Spheres of Dhamma
The knowing orb is one wholesome sphere among the 84,000 sections of , all luminous orbs. Their outward form may look identical — a bright sphere — but their inner qualities differ according to their name: the orb of relaxation, of gentleness, of softness, of ease. When we focus on any Dhamma, that quality appears in the mind, one at a time, like a fan with several blades taking turns spinning through.
Dedicating Merit to Ancestors
As the stream of merit flows continuously, dedicate it to ancestors waiting anxiously in the other realm. Recall parents, siblings, grandparents, teachers of great kindness, guardian devas, and beings we may have wronged — our karmic counterparties — mutually forgiving one another.
Radiating Mettā from Home to the Cosmos
Form the wish that all beings find freedom from suffering and , then radiate a heart full of outward — through our home, village, district, province, country, and the whole world, making it a crystal world, bright and pure. May celestial beings of every realm, formless Brahmas, hell-beings, hungry ghosts, and asuras all be free from suffering, before expanding into the atmosphere of the cosmos across countless world-systems.
Sealing the Aspiration
He closes by invoking blessings from Nibbana and the merit of the great teachers, asking that all accumulated merit converge into sacred power, dissolving misfortune and defilement, granting the Dhamma-eye, sound health, long life, and continuous progress on the path, and rebirth into a family of right view — while asking forgiveness for past wrongs and resolving to commit no new ones, closing with the chant on the power of the Triple Gem.
