Does feeling steeped in merit when recalling Luang Pu, Luang Por, and Khun Yai mean I am doing it right?
Feeling steeped in merit when recalling one's teachers is exactly as it should be. As impurities within the mind are purified through practice, a mass of purity forms, and one begins to feel that steeping in merit. For newer practitioners who still carry impurities, the masters refine and correct them until they too can feel it.
Someone asked: having learned from Phra Ajarn that the senior masters watch over and safeguard our , whenever I recall Luang Pu, Luang Por, and Khun Yai, I feel steeped in merit welling up inside me — is this correct?
Phra Ajarn answered: Yes, that is exactly right. It has to be this way. But for some people who are still new to practice, this feeling has not yet arisen, because in the early stages there are still impurities present. When impurities remain, as the mind rests in the center, the masters work to refine and correct them. At that stage one does not yet feel the steeping in merit, because the impurities are still there. The masters keep refining and correcting until the impurities are gone. Once the impurities are gone, a mass of forms, and only then can we begin to feel that steeping in merit.
Well done — that is exactly how it should be. This shows that through practice, the masters have refined the impurities away down to their very root, and so one is now able to feel steeped in merit very well.
