The key is dwelling in a wholesome state throughout the day, which lets the Triple Gem and Nibbana shine within and a stream of merit purify the inner dhamma elements — so by the time you sit, stillness comes quickly because there is less defilement. Holding to “composure” alone lets mindfulness and clear comprehension become complete, and stillness follows automatically.
Someone shared that they have been trying to stay aware throughout the day — listening to talks while doing various activities, and maintaining awareness through the different postures. Even though the awareness during the postures felt slow, when they sat down to meditate it became more still than usual — it felt like the most correct sit they had ever had. They asked why.
The key point is dwelling within system. When we dwell in the wholesome system through the various postures and activities, the Triple Gem nests within us, and Nibbana appears bright and radiant at our center. A stream of then flows through, refining and purifying the elements within us. So by the time we sit down, things move quickly, because there is little defilement left.
Also, since we have already prepared ourselves through these practices, Nibbana has already nested and the Triple Gem is already shining beautifully at our center. So when we sit, it naturally becomes still. Once you understand this truth, it becomes easy.
We might call it “composure” (สำรวม) — the word monks use. Once you are composed, it becomes automatic: and become complete on their own. Just keep holding to composure — composure, composure, composure — and stillness settles in by itself, automatically.
