In ancient times, reaching Nibbāna through the gross body didn't involve this closed-bud form; later, access required the Dhamma body instead.
Someone asked: why is the body's seventh base, which sits above the sixth, not the first point one reaches?
This spot has been deliberately sealed off — by force. Because the unwholesome force sealed it, it takes on the form of a closed lotus bud. In ancient times, reaching Nibbāna through the gross physical body didn't involve this closed-bud formation. Later on, it was no longer possible to reach Nibbāna through the gross body alone, so access had to come through instead — and it's this closed-bud formation that marks the structural difference between the later era and the one before it.
