Why Do We Sometimes Feel Reluctant Toward Someone We've Never Met? Is This Related to First Impression and Backdrop?
The sense of being drawn to or repelled by someone we've never met in this life is the result of the law of karma pulling together people who once shared causes in a past life. That feeling belongs to a subtler body overlaid within our heart, not to us directly.
Someone asked: why is it that sometimes, when we meet someone we've never known before, we feel reluctant to get involved with them? Is this related to first impression and to our backdrop?
The answer is yes. Our life exists within the law of karma, carrying results from the past into the present; the law of karma bears fruit in each present moment, and the law of the Three Characteristics takes that fruit and shapes it into new karma that carries forward into the future. Within us, in , the dimension of merit and demerit releases a current that draws various conditions into our lives.
People we meet, even if we've never known them in this present life, may have known each other in a past life — this too is the result of the law of karma drawing us together, because we once acted in connection with one another in the past. If we were born in the same period, it can make us feel drawn to certain people the moment we see them. If we treated that person well in the past, even though in truth there was always a mix of good and bad — sometimes good, sometimes not — the overall impression, whether favorable or unfavorable, carries an effect into this life when we meet again.
If, in a past life, we felt distressed, and being close to that person felt draining and hurt our feelings, then when we meet them again, that same feeling resurfaces. But this feeling does not truly belong to us — it belongs to a subtler body, something ordinary people know nothing about. When any nature possesses us, it overlays its own body-feeling-mind- onto ours, and its thinking appears within our own thoughts. If that thinking feels unfavorable or unlikeable, there is always an underlying cause for that dislike.
It's just like meeting someone in this life, working with them, and feeling no favorable impression at all — then meeting them again and feeling that same lack of favor and dislike once more. Life within the cycle of existence works this way: the past is like yesterday; a past life is like the day before yesterday; earlier lives are like the days before that — and the one who keeps record of these causes knows this, even though ordinary humans know nothing of it. When we meet someone, that keeper of records perceives the corresponding feeling, and displeasure or favorable impression then appears in our own thoughts and feelings, because the body-feeling-mind-dhamma of that backdrop has overlaid itself onto our heart. Whatever the heart knows, that is what we come to know.
