90%In this evening talk at Khao Kaeo Sadet, the teacher teaches cultivating the truth of suffering to cross the great barrier in practice, illustrated through a foreign student's ordeal with heavy impurity and his own reflections. He explains how the law of kamma and the law of impermanence work together, recounts several real healing stories grounded in wholesome practice, and closes with why the neutral nature is more dangerous than it appears — consuming as much as 90% of our life's time.

Mind-Liberation Must Be Trained to Be Seen Moment by Moment

The teacher opens by reiterating that mind-liberation must be observed unfolding in each single moment; we must train ourselves to see liberation moment by moment as the changes that occur. Once progress reaches a certain point, a major barrier appears that must be crossed by cultivating .

A Story: A European Practitioner Who Faced a Heavy Barrier of Impurity

The teacher continues a story about a European student in her twenties who came to study in Thailand. He met her at a forest cave temple popular with foreign practitioners. She attended his talks every single day until the end of his stay, then asked to continue studying with him, eventually attaining inner light. She studied both theory and practice together until her understanding deepened. A year later, she sat in meditation with strict discipline every morning until noon. The teacher taught her about the major barrier: when unwholesomeness blocks im in front of a threshold before a major dimensional shift, the encounter becomes deeply painful, and most people cannot bear it. He therefore taught the truth of suffering in advance — that sustained daily practice will eventually meet this barrier, and when it does, one must push straight through rather than reset. Resetting wastes time, like fully recharging a battery only to drain it again each time; pushing through directly saves time and also earns austerity (tapo).

Suffering Is a State That Must Be Endured and Is Hard to Endure — Simply Acknowledging It Is Enough

The teacher explains, following the Buddha's words, that suffering () is a state that must be endured and is difficult to endure; when it arises, simply acknowledging it with awareness is enough. As we approach a particularly dark layer of impurity, this hard-to-bear state intensifies, especially the deeper we go into concentration. We must therefore focus awareness to establish the sphere of — a bright, clear, wholesome sphere that, once arisen, draws in pure energy to drive system, refining us toward purity. While facing this suffering and enduring it, the comes to help, bringing austerity as armor to prevent us from being overwhelmed. Wholesomeness helps ease it just enough to remain bearable, and forges new, stronger armor during that very endurance.

A Story: A Monk Who Saw the Practitioner in Tears During Meditation

A fellow monk once saw this same student sitting in meditation with tears streaming down her face and asked the teacher why she continued despite such visible suffering. The teacher explained that she knew enduring would earn her new armor, so she had to endure — because gaining that new armor was what would let her push through the barrier.

"Mindfulness Paired with Ease" Doesn't Contradict Having to Endure

The teacher explains that Luang Por's teaching "mindfulness paired with ease" doesn't contradict the need to endure suffering. When illness brings us to the point of near-fainting, we adjust our inward state just enough to remain bearable, not all the way to collapse. Shifting slightly away from the crisis point produces enough ease to keep functioning — not blissful comfort, but a state where suffering is present yet manageable enough to continue. Mindfulness then continues refining and lightening the impurity. Those who misunderstand this think "ease" must mean feeling nothing at all, and stop sitting the moment discomfort appears — wasting the most valuable resource of all: time.

Checking In: When Sitting, Notice Which Nature Currently Governs the Heart

The first thing to check upon sitting is feeling (vedanā) — pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral. If something must be endured, unwholesomeness governs the heart at that moment, and it naturally manifests as a state that is hard to bear. The Buddha taught that when suffering arises, simply acknowledging it is enough — ac it, adjust the feeling just enough to keep moving forward, let mindfulness arise, let patience bring its armor, and once bearable, let the sphere of knowing draw in pure energy to gradually lighten the impurity. Suffering is a clearer signal than most other meditation objects, because unlike other objects that restlessness can easily disrupt, suffering is a state too vivid to lose track of, making it easy for mindfulness to stay anchored.

Two Kinds of Suffering: Temporary from the Law of Impermanence, Persistent from the Law of Kamma

The teacher distinguishes suffering caused by the law of impermanence — the three natures competing for control — which is temporary, since wholesomeness can reclaim control before long, from suffering caused by , which persists continuously regardless of activity, because the sphere of demerit keeps releasing its current. If we abide in the wholesome system, wholesomeness helps us pay off only a portion of the debt (say, 10-20%), while it finds ways to help with the rest. Outside the wholesome system, we must pay the full debt — or even more, if caught within system, which piles new demerit on top continuously.

A Story: A Language-School Franchise That Brought Years of Suffering

The teacher recounts someone who invested in a language-teaching franchise despite having no relevant expertise, then called seeking advice. He advised accepting the loss to prevent it from growing worse, but kammic residue caused the losses to compound instead — years of family conflict, lost money, lost time, and lost health followed before finally breaking free. Had this person understood and abided in the wholesome system earlier, the burden might have been lighter, though accumulated demerit still had to run its course regardless.

Every Present Moment Is a Result of the Law of Kamma, Then the Law of Impermanence Takes Over

The teacher explains that every present moment results from the law of kamma. When wholesome kammic results manifest, we find ourselves in a favorable realm conducive to wholesomeness — comfortable, at ease, like enjoying air conditioning on a hot day, similar to how celestial beings experience wholesome kammic results. At the same time, the law of impermanence takes over, using the net result — joy or sorrow — as its opening to direct new causes. When conditions favor wholesomeness, wholesomeness easily guides us toward accumulating further merit, and upon completing a great merit project, we receive a completed blueprint sealed within the sphere of merit, affecting both near and distant futures and accelerating our perfections' rightward turning. We needn't crave wealth directly, because the Universal Monarch at the center of our sphere of merit already manages our resources — we need only remain good-hearted, and merit flows naturally, bringing wealth along with it.

Life After Death Is Long — We Need Provisions for That Journey

The teacher warns that life after death extends for an unimaginably long time until one attains the path and fruit of Nibbana, so we need resources for that long journey. Regardless of religion, a genuinely good heart is what matters, since merit flows universally to anyone who cultivates it. Only wholesomeness is a nature that truly benefits us unconditionally; the neutral nature helps in neither good nor bad times, since that simply isn't its function, while unwholesomeness only destroys — however good we are to it, it will betray us regardless.

Wholesome Emotions Versus Unwholesome Emotions: A Clear Distinction

The teacher lists wholesome emotions: relaxed, spacious, open, light and at ease, fulfilled, cheerful, refreshed, refined, gentle, clear, cool, at peace in heart and mind. Unwholesome emotions include boredom, gloom, stress, irritation, exhaustion, discouragement, hopelessness, depression, restlessness, annoyance, and confusion. Many mistakenly believe that stress is necessary to solve problems — but that is precisely the unwholesome emotional state that compounds damage repeatedly. Wholesomeness instead reassures us: it's fine, take it step by step — always offering encouragement.

A Story: A Foreign Practitioner Freed From Panic and Depression Without Medication

The teacher recounts a foreign practitioner who had suffered from depression and panic disorder since adolescence and traveled to Thailand for an ordination retreat. When her condition worsened severely, hospital medication proved ineffective, so she was entrusted to the teacher's care. Asked if she wanted to genuinely recover, she agreed to stop the medication on his assurance he would help her heal, sitting in meditation every morning, afternoon, and evening. When symptoms flared, he taught her: "the heart is not us, we are not the heart." The burning senon in her head and the inner voice insisting she would surely die were merely minor impurity triggering a hormonal reaction lasting only a brief moment. He taught her to comfort herself — it's fine, it will pass soon — and never to cry along with that inner voice, since the heart is like a child needing comfort from a parent. Her symptoms eased and, for the first time in years, disappeared entirely. The teacher explains that the visible symptoms were only the surface effect; the root cause lay deeper within and required meditation to let wholesomeness cleanse it at the source. After roughly three months of practice, her condition had improved enough for her to return home.

A Story: A Paralysis Patient Who Recovered Enough to Help at Home Through Reciting "Samma Araham"

The teacher tells of an elderly man paralyzed and bedridden for two years with no improvement. The teacher suggested he look at a Buddha image and recite "Samma Araham" repeatedly, as often as he felt inclined. Three months later, before the end of the rains retreat, the man was able to cling to the wall and help out at the family shop.

A Story: A Couple Who Kept the Eight Precepts Through an Entire Rains Retreat Until Physical Symptoms Vanished

The teacher recounts a woman who suffered unexplained, severe pain for ten years, diagnosed by doctors as psychosomatic. Her foreign husband, after hearing a talk on the benefits of the eight precepts, asked whether keeping them for himself, dedicated to his wife, could heal her. The teacher suggested trying just three days first. He succeeded and extended his vow through the entire three-month retreat. Seeing her husband's determination, the wife took up the eight precepts too — despite normally fainting if she skipped dinner — yet experienced no symptoms throughout the entire retreat. By the end, medical checkups showed her condition had improved so much she no longer needed her forty daily pills.

A Story: An Unexpected Long-Term Work Visa

The teacher describes someone working in a casino who feared losing their visa renewal. The teacher arranged meditation times around the person's work schedule — early morning and afternoon — with shared dedication of intention every day. Within a month, the distress resolved, and later, through unexpected assistance, the person obtained a long-term visa of three to five years — something unheard of for anyone in that community before. The teacher notes this demonstrates the power of wholesomeness, provable only by testing it firsthand.

Our Role Is to Supply Information to Another's Wholesomeness, Not to Interfere With Their Kamma

The teacher stresses that when teaching someone, we aren't teaching the human being directly but the wholesomeness within them, supplying information that wholesomeness can later reinforce while they shower, eat, or drive. We never overstep another's kammic path — we only offer guidance; whether it's acted upon depends on the wholesomeness already within them.

The Neutral Nature Is More Dangerous Than It Seems — It Consumes 90% of Our Time

The teacher warns that the neutral nature seems harmless since it causes no suffering, but its true danger lies in consuming over 90% of our life's time, leaving little room for good thoughts, words, or deeds. We therefore need a "reserve of power" for emergencies — the purpose of dedicated retreats of three or seven days, recharging our wholesome energy reserve to dissolve impurity during future crises.

The Instruments Within the Sphere of Dhamma — Usable Even Unseen

The teacher explains that morality provides safety, concentration keeps us from being misled by unwholesomeness and connects us to an inner advisor who warns us, wisdom shows us the suffering and danger of unwholesome things until we wish to be free, liberation frees us automatically, and the knowledge-and-vision of liberation leads us to a better life. All of this works even without our seeing it, just as a blind person can use a refrigerator or air conditioner without seeing it. Our human role has only two parts: learn and understand, then determine what we want.

The Colors Within Each Body: Wholesome White, Unwholesome Black, Neutral Ash-Gray

Asked whether every nature controls through the same Dhammakaya form, the teacher explains that everything takes the form of the Dhamma-body, differing only in color. Wholesomeness is clear white, pure, comforting to see; unwholesomeness is deep black at every level of body, like a black hole draining life energy just by perceiving it; the neutral nature is ash-gray, the color of lead. Only wholesomeness can genuinely be relied upon, because betrayal is simply normal behavior for unwholesomeness.

A Story: A Rural Abbot Who Received an Ordination Hall Without Asking Anyone for Money

The teacher tells of an abbot at a remote forest temple whose villagers wanted an ordination hall built, yet he never solicited donations — simply sweeping leaves, sitting in meditation, and leading chanting as usual, posting only a small sign at the temple's entrance reading, "This temple wishes to build an ordination hall." Within a month, a military officer arrived searching for the abbot, explaining it had taken over ten days to locate the temple because a deity had appeared in his dream instructing him to build the hall there. The teacher concludes: simply abide in the wholesome system, and the system works on our behalf.

Craving Makes Life Difficult; the "Shortcuts" Unwholesomeness Offers Are Traps

The teacher explains that once we've received results proportional to our own causes, if we still crave more, unwholesomeness offers "shortcuts" that are invariably traps — illogical from the start, yet accepted anyway. He gives the example of online shopping, where excitement over a purchase fades within days, prompting another purchase, or landing a new job that brings joy for only a few days before craving the next promotion — unlike someone with who harvests small, daily from what they already have.

Contentment: Delighting in What We Already Have and Are, Even in Difficult Circumstances

The teacher gives the example of someone wrongly imprisoned, crying every night for a month before finally adjusting. Had they accepted the situation as a result of the law of kamma from the start, adjustment would have happened immediately. Wholesomeness guides us to adapt in ways that let us survive and find small joys even within difficult circumstances. This happiness born of contentment matters enormously for practitioners, because it lets us perceive the small, moment-to-moment changes that keep us motivated to continue.

Buddhism Doesn't Just Teach "Do Good, Avoid Evil, Purify the Mind" — It Reveals the Mechanism Behind It

The teacher closes by pointing out that "do good, avoid evil, purify the mind" already existed in every society before the Buddha's time. It took the Buddha twenty incalculable eons of cultivating perfections to teach something else entirely: the mechanism behind what actually controls all beings — the three natures and how they operate — recorded in the Abhi, which nowhere simply instructs "do good, avoid evil." It speaks instead of the wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral natures and the tools and mechanisms each uses. It is the result of wholesomeness itself that teaches us to do good and avoid evil — more precisely expressed as "cultivating wholesomeness to completeness." Once we learn and cultivate wholesomeness fully, our lives transform into something truly excellent and wondrous.

Closing Chant

The teacher closes by leading reverence to the Buddha, explaining that every time we pay homage, we should recollect the Triple Gem within, letting the current of merit from the deepest part of Nibbana pour continuously into our center, driving the wholesome system, refining the elements within us toward purity, freeing us from one dimension into a subtler one — increasing the proportion of wholesomeness, weakening unwholesomeness and neutrality, giving life more substance, lightness, spaciousness, and vitality. He then leads the recollection of the Triple Gem as refuge, and closes with a dedication asking for the boundless power of Nibbana together with the perfections of Luang Pu, Luang Por, and Khun Yay to protect everyone, freeing them from suffering and danger, granting the Dhamma-eye and full penetration into the knowledge of Dhammakaya, with wondrous great treasures following them through every realm and lifetime until they reach the ultimate end of Dhamma.
