ฝันเห็นญาติที่จากไปแล้วใจหดหู่ สิ่งที่รู้สึกเตือนสติในใจคืออะไร?I Dreamed of a Departed Relative and Felt Heavy-Hearted — What Was That Voice Warning Me?
Thoughts and feelings that arise on their own aren't always truly "ours" — they're the overlay of three natures taking turns as master of the mind. Recognizing this and staying anchored in the wholesome keeps the heart from sinking into unwholesome thought.
A lay follower shared that she dreamed of relatives who had passed away. Waking up, she felt heavy-hearted and sorrowful, but in that moment something inside seemed to remind her not to dwell on such thoughts since the departed had already moved on. She tried to let the thought go, and asked whether that was the right thing to do.
A Thought That Arises on Its Own Isn't Always "Yours"
The teacher affirmed this was the right response, and explained that no thought is purely "our own." All thoughts belong to one of three natures — wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral — which take turns seizing the mind. Whichever one manages to overlay itself brings its own feelings and thoughts into our awareness, since the mind is only an "instrument of knowing." The proof: if a thought were truly our own, simply ceasing to think it should make it vanish. But here, even after actively rejecting the thought, the feeling persisted — showing it wasn't truly hers to begin with.
The Three Natures and the Overlay of Body, Feeling, Mind, and Mental Objects
When nature overlays the mind, it brings in the body-feeling-mind-mental-object pattern of realms lower than the human one, drawing in unwholesome energy that presses our elements down. When nature overlays instead, it brings in the pattern of realms higher than the human one, lifting the heart and mind upward. What we feel and think in that moment is theirs, not ours alone — all made possible by the 89 types of consciousness, of which only one belongs to the human realm.
Life Under the Law of Karma and the Law of the Three Characteristics
Our life is governed by two laws at once: the law of karma, which gives results moment by moment, and , under which the three natures compete to seize the mind. When unwholesome karma bears fruit, we feel a state that is difficult to bear; when wholesome karma bears fruit, we feel at ease; when neutral karma bears fruit, we feel neither.
The Way Forward: Stay Aware, Stay With the Wholesome
Because the human body alone can do very little, we must rely on the wholesome system, learning to understand the principles that keep us anchored there. The single most important thing to know is : when suffering appears, simply being aware of it is enough; its cause is craving, which must be relinquished; ceson can hold it back for a moment; and the path must be cultivated to resolve it completely. The teacher recommended observing our teacher's "Four S's" — awareness, ease, consistency, and observation — which keep us grounded in the right principle, gradually making practice easier and more comfortable.
