The teacher explains that meditation trains the mind to grow familiar with calm, until the subtler layers of body, feeling, mind, and mental objects act as an inner "mentor" guiding daily life. The more time given to practice, the greater that familiarity and the greater the help received.

Someone played a recorded teaching from an elder teacher: meditation is training the mind to see calm, to perceive the feeling and state of calm, and to grow accustomed and skilled in that calm. When meditation ends and daily life resumes, the mind still remembers that state. Even though outward chaos remains — a natural feature of the world and its defilements — a mind accustomed to calm no longer suffers over it. It simply watches, knows, and lets go, until wisdom arises that can release instantly whenever something disturbing arises. The questioner asked the teacher to explain this further.

The Mechanism Behind It: Body, Feeling, Mind, and Mental Objects as "Mentor"

The teacher explained that when we cultivate meditation, wholesome nature layers itself over us, drawing on subtler forms of body, feeling, mind, and mental objects than the human body — a refined human body, a divine body, or a Brahma body, depending on one's level at that moment — to act as a "mentor," gradually raising the quality of the human body. Through repeated practice, one is lifted from one mentor level to a subtler one; reaching the Brahma body level indicates entry into the first jhana. Every time we cultivate meditation, these mentors guide our thoughts and feelings, seemingly of our own accord.

Conversely, in worldly life, when the heart becomes attached to people, animals, or things, unwholesome forces may instead draw in lower mentoring influences. Familiarity matters enormously here — much like friendship: the more familiar two friends are, the more freely they can advise each other through difficulties. The same applies to calm cultivated through practice — the more it's practiced, the greater the familiarity with wholesome mentors, and the greater their capacity to help.

Why It Matters to Keep Giving Time to Practice

The teacher explained that life has a part we can control — giving time and maintaining awareness — and a part beyond our control, which unfolds automatically through wholesome nature. The more time given, the greater the mentor's familiarity, and the more help arrives during a crisis. True calm arises from sustained awareness, drawing in pure energy that cleanses im; the lighter the impurity becomes, the more clearly calm appears. Whether one is accustomed to giving, keeping precepts, or cultivating concentration and wisdom, the corresponding wholesome mentor comes to help according to the familiarity built up over time.

The Role of the Knower and the Powerful One

He explained that our lives depend on two things: the Knower, who guides us through problems seemingly as our own thoughts, and the Powerful One, who layers in to cleanse the impurities that cause obstacles. Humans alone cannot keep pace with unwholesome influence, since it too refines its methods continually — which is why so many mistakes occur in the world, largely guided by unwholesomeness, while and fulfilled wishes arise from the guidance of the Knower and the Powerful One. Connecting with them requires spiritual practice. Precepts help to a degree, but concentration relates directly to mind and s — exactly what unwholesome forces use to guide us astray. Increasing the proportion of wholesomeness through practice is therefore the only way to resolve this at the level of mind and mental factors. Precepts form the foundation; concentration connects to the pure wisdom of the Knower and the Powerful One; wisdom and diligence follow from there, eventually leading to liberation.
