Focusing our attention at the center of the body, rather than listening with the ears, draws the mind, consciousness, and the current of pure merit-energy to that point, making it the place where purification and liberation happen continuously.
What Does It Mean to Listen From the Center of the Body
Someone asked: when listening to the guided meditation, the teacher said not to listen with the ears but to listen from the center of the body — what does that actually mean? Does it mean placing the mind there?
The teacher confirmed: yes, it means placing the mind there. Wherever we focus, wherever we direct our attention, the mind goes there. As the Buddha said, "Monks, you should be mindful" — mindful here means marking, specifying, or pointing to where the mind is meant to go. Mindfulness, , can only arise in one place — the mind — nowhere else. Wholesome s, both consciousness and its accompaniments, arise at the center of the mind.
Wherever we focus, the mind goes there — focus at , and the mind settles at the center of the body. The wholesome mind and its mental factors gather there too, along with the entirety of consciousness — seeing, remembering, thinking, and knowing — all converging at that one point. Once we focus there, sound is perceived through that same point, since the element of consciousness — what perceives sights, tastes, smells, sounds, and touch — is centered there. Wherever perception happens, that point brightens.
The current of pure energy, merit, flows into that brightness. The center of the body brightens with pure merit-energy flowing through it, refining and purifying the elements there. That brightness merges with the brightness of merit-energy from the subtle body, the celestial body, the Brahma body, and , all layered as concentric spheres of merit at the center of the body — the vital point where purification and liberation happen continuously.
