The Master teaches: think positive only, never negative, and don't associate with people who don't use their wisdom — because wealth never stays with someone who thinks negatively; it stays with someone who thinks positively. This is because the wholesome or unwholesome nature possessing the mind draws in matching energy and builds a network around it. Only those who dwell within the wholesome system can draw wealth to themselves.
Someone asked the Master about a teaching on managing one's mind during hard economic times, and why thinking positively affects one's ability to attract wealth.
The Principle: Never Think Negative, Don't Associate With Troubled People
The Master taught that everyone should keep their mind clear and think positively only — no matter whether the economy rises or falls, we can still become wealthy. Never think negative, and don't associate or converse with people who are troubled or who don't use their wisdom, because doing so wastes the time we should spend building perfections and drains our good state of mind for nothing. A person's negative thinking is their own mental affair — it has nothing to do with us. Wealth never stays with someone who thinks negatively; it always stays with someone who thinks positively.
The Mechanism Behind It: The Wholesome Mind vs. the Unwholesome Mind
The Master explained that the reason some people think positively and others negatively comes down to which nature — wholesome or unwholesome — possesses the mind. When wholesomeness possesses the mind, it overlays a wholesome mind-state along with wholesome s, continuously drawing in pure energy together with a blueprint for success and refined treasure, and even drawing back in merit accumulated in the past. The opposite happens when unwholesomeness is the host — it makes us feel stifled, forced to endure, and steers our thinking negative, in order to draw in the polluted energy called demerit, which comes bundled with misfortune that destroys wealth.
The Network of Merit vs. the Network of Demerit
He pointed out that a person possessed by unwholesomeness becomes a tool for steering others toward negative thinking too, forming a "network" on the demerit side — just as networks exist on side and the neutral side. Those steeped in demerit tend to gather with others steeped in demerit; those rich in merit tend to gather with others rich in merit. Each network has its own group background that keeps amplifying that side's energy and channeling it back to each member. Staying within a demerit-based network makes wealth extremely difficult to attain, no matter how hard one tries, because misfortune keeps undoing one's fortune.
Why We Should Avoid Negative News
The Master explained that dwelling on war news, politics, or wishing ruin upon one side or another all unknowingly draw in an unwholesome mind-state — even though our life should instead be a channel for the stream of merit to flow through. He taught that we should choose to consume only what leads toward wholesomeness, rightness, and goodness — grounded in , compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity — because time in this world is limited, so we should choose to think well, speak well, and act well. This is why the first item in the Mangala Sutta forbids associating with fools, and the second calls for associating with the wise — because associating with fools yields no benefit whatsoever, only suffering and harm.
How Do You Think Positive When You're Stressed?
Someone asked further: when a person is stressed, how can they think positively? The Master answered that stress is a signal that side has already possessed the mind — the mind starts to darken, and that's why stress follows. The remedy is to have a good , listen to the often, sit in meditation, and learn to place the mind correctly — because without knowing how to settle the mind, we can't draw on the power within ourselves, and the benefit of merit finds no opening. The more we dwell within the wholesome system, the more right view develops, and the easier it becomes to settle the mind correctly as a result.
