In this afternoon talk during the Ordination in Honor of Luang Por Dhamma program (batch #11), the teacher explains the roles of the sphere of liberation and the sphere of knowledge-vision of liberation. He teaches that real freedom requires seeing the suffering and danger of whatever binds us, illustrated by a taxi driver who quit smoking through contemplation, and the story of an orphaned sea turtle that explains the three natures governing humanity — closing with why right view is the most essential of the ten bases of merit.

The Sphere of Liberation and the Sphere of Knowledge-Vision of Liberation: Two Layers of Freedom

The teacher opens by reviewing the instruments within us: , morality, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the -and-vision of liberation. Those who ordain must study the training of morality, concentration, and wisdom, as these are the primary tools within us. The sphere of liberation is the instrument of freedom itself, but wisdom must first show us the suffering and danger of whatever binds us. Without a genuine wish to be freed, liberation cannot happen even if the sphere of liberation is present. The sphere of knowledge-and-vision of liberation, in turn, brings us into a better life — once freed from the old, this sphere helps compose the life we want, arising with every meditation session or every act of goodness.

Freedom Unfolds Dimension by Dimension, Like a Child Growing Unnoticed Day by Day

Every time wholesomeness arises, merit flows in to purify the elements of within whatever dimension we currently occupy, freeing us into a new dimension with each activity that draws in pure energy. But this liberation isn't immediately obvious — like a child who grows a little every day, yet the people living with that child can't perceive the growth until time has passed. Formal meditation is different: because we maintain continuous focused awareness, merit flows in continuously purifying im, so the difference before and after sitting is clearly noticeable — heavy and dull before sitting, then after an hour or two of practice, refreshingly clear and at ease. That difference is the visible fruit of liberation.

An Experience in Japan: Liberation Dimension by Dimension, Even Without Full Enlightenment

The teacher recalls teaching in Japan; after his Dhamma talk, listeners told him they felt remarkably light. He explains this is a genuine result of liberation — though not liberation as an arahant or noble being, simply movement from one dimension into a subtler one. Enough accumulation lets us notice the difference before and after. In stark contrast, spending an hour playing cards leaves us feeling clear beforehand but clouded and heavy afterward; other unwholesome activities work the same way — tense, dull, lacking the freshness and lightness of true clarity. A life abiding in system is thus a life of continuous liberation, moving from dimension to dimension — which is exactly why studying morality, concentration, and wisdom matters, as they are the essential tools leading to the sphere of liberation.

Morality, Concentration, and Wisdom: Different Grades of Purity Across Dimensions

The sphere of morality brightens when we undertake with genuine intent to keep body and speech clean and pure; the merit-substance drawn in clears away demeritorious impurity attached to us, gradually shedding the grip of unwholesomeness and raising us into subtler, more refined dimensions. Five precepts liberate us from unwholesomeness; eight precepts liberate us from both unwholesomeness and neutrality, greatly increasing the proportion of wholesomeness within us. Once wholesomeness arises in these subtler dimensions, the merit flowing in becomes purer, more sacred, more refined; the subtle treasures attached carry greater quality and value, the completed blueprint is finer still, and even the knower and power presiding over that dimension is wiser and more capable.

Morality addresses only two things: body and speech. It relies on genuine goodwill and steady resolve to keep ourselves and fellow humans safe from unwholesomeness and neutrality. Concentration, meanwhile, refines the heart itself, learning to draw pure energy in to cleanse the mind's impurity through a single line of focused awareness: "Monks, you should clearly discern body, feeling, mind, and Dhamma, in order to remove covetousness and grief regarding the world." This alone is enough to purify the elements of Dhamma, moving us from one dimension into a subtler one. Morality carries us this far; concentration carries us further still, deeper and deeper, toward the internal knower, who teaches wisdom that unlocks the 84,000 kinds of locks set by unwholesomeness. The wholesome side must therefore carry 84,000 kinds of keys in turn. External teachers can only guide us to a certain level, aiming us toward the internal knower — and it is this internal knower who then teaches us to unlock, one lock at a time, freeing us progressively.

A Story: Luang Pu Toh and Luang Pu Sodh, Who Did Not Wish for Full Liberation

The teacher tells the story of Luang Pu Toh of Wat Pradu Chimplee, a monastery near Wat Paknam, who was a friend of Luang Pu Sodh. Luang Pu Toh once asked Luang Pu Sodh how to attain liberation from samsara; Luang Pu Sodh taught him the method, and Luang Pu Toh practiced it until he attained arahantship. Afterward, whenever people came to Luang Pu Sodh seeking abundant merit, he would often direct them to seek it instead from Luang Pu Toh, because Luang Pu Toh had achieved complete liberation as an arahant. Luang Pu Sodh himself, though fully capable of the same liberation, chose not to pursue it, because he did not wish for it — and without that wish, even with the sphere of liberation present, liberation cannot occur. All the knowledge and method existed within him, capable of teaching others, but without his own wish to be liberated, he himself remained unliberated.

The Human Body's Sphere of Liberation Resolves Only Human-Level Problems

The teacher explains that the human body's sphere of liberation frees us from human-level problems — addiction to alcohol, tobacco, gambling, or lust — the impurities of the human body specifically. This is not liberation as an arahant; the human sphere of liberation addresses only human-level problems. The furthest point of this level of liberation leads to the sphere of knowledge-and-vision of liberation, which carries us onward to subtler bodies — from the subtle human body to the celestial body, from the subtle celestial body to the form-Brahma body, and so on in sequence. True liberation as an arahant, however, requires direct access to the Dhamma-body itself.

Seeing Suffering and Danger Is What Frees Us: A Taxi Driver Who Quit Smoking

Liberation requires the spheres of morality, concentration, and wisdom to first show us the suffering and danger inherent in whatever binds us. Someone addicted to smoking must first see the suffering and danger of that addiction and develop genuine weariness and a wish to be free before the sphere of liberation can act. Without that wish, no liberation follows, regardless of the addiction. The teacher recalls a taxi driver from southern Thailand who explained how he quit smoking without any program or medication: every time he craved a cigarette, he would recite its dangers internally, contemplating them repeatedly until the craving dissolved. The teacher explains that this works because wisdom must first see the suffering and danger of whatever binds us; once that danger is truly seen, the heart refuses to accept it any longer. Unwholesomeness uses the heart as its tool, teaching us to indulge little by little. In every fraction of a second, wholesomeness and unwholesomeness compete for control; when the wholesome system overlays itself during that contemplation of danger, it supplies information about the suffering and simultaneously draws in purifying energy. This is exactly how any bad habit can genuinely be overcome — the wholesome system works continuously to purify impurity, gradually weakening proportion until wholesomeness dominates and the behavior finally stops.

Seeing the Danger of the Five Sensual Pleasures Leads to Weariness of the World

Liberation from samsara requires seeing the suffering and danger in sensual pleasure, because we perceive the world only through the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and body — the world consists of just these five things: form, taste, smell, sound, and touch. Repeatedly seeing and recognizing the suffering and danger within these five brings weariness of the world. Eating becomes an occasion to contemplate the danger even in delicious food; what once seemed desirable no longer is. Woman is considered the ultimate object of form; contemplating this leads to seeing its suffering and danger too. The taste of food, the ultimate object of taste, is recognized as merely a clinging to the notion of deliciousness; continued contemplation lets go of attachment to form, taste, smell, and sound alike. Once suffering and danger are seen thoroughly enough to produce weariness with the world and freedom from clinging, the knowledge of disenchantment (nibbidā-ñāṇa) arises. Once this arises, liberation acts — though this liberation isn't confined to the human body alone; there remain subtler bodies — the celestial, the form-Brahma, the formless-Brahma, the Dhamma-body — so this is only an initial level of liberation, letting go of self-identity view (sakkāya-diṭṭhi), not yet the full liberation of an arahant.

Wisdom Requires Light, the Dhamma-Eye, Direct Knowledge, and Insight Together

To let go of self-identity view, the internal knower teaches meditation practice until we reach the gotrabhū Dhamma-body and the stream-enterer path Dhamma-body, using that Dhamma-body to contemplate the Wheel of Dhamma and the suffering and danger of the human body. Only then can we attain the entry-level state of a noble being. Human beings cannot achieve liberation without relying on the of the Dhamma-body; wisdom alone isn't enough — it must be joined with light, the Dhamma-eye, direct knowledge (vijjā), and (ñāṇa), all together forming the wisdom capable of perceiving disenchantment. This is like viewing bacteria too small to see with the naked eye — we need a microscope, which requires light to see anything through it, and we need actual knowledge to understand what we're looking at, and insight to connect us with the knower who possesses that knowledge. When all these elements come together, wisdom sees the suffering and danger clearly, leading to the knowledge of disenchantment, which frees us from the human body — the sphere of liberation belonging to the stream-enterer path Dhamma-body then carries out this liberation.

Building a New Way of Life: Waking Up Already Abiding in Wholesomeness

The teacher expresses his wish that everyone return home to build a new way of life — waking up already abiding in the wholesome system. Set aside a corner of a room, even a bedroom, as a place for morning chanting and paying respects, connecting to the Triple Gem within from the moment of waking. From there, go about daily life, cultivating toward people and all beings throughout the day. Each of us needs our own "students" to whom we can pass on this knowledge — otherwise the knowledge fades, gradually obscured by until it's forgotten. Teaching others doesn't need to be formal; simply sharing what we've learned as a story is enough.

A Story: The Orphaned Sea Turtle and the Three Natures That Control Humanity

The teacher recalls once teaching a group of foreigners to understand the wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral natures within twenty minutes, using the story of the sea turtle. When a sea turtle hatches, it has no information in its head at all — no parents raise it; it must fend for itself from the very start. Yet every single hatchling, regardless of where in the world it's born — Europe, America, Africa, Thailand, China — walks straight toward the sea. How does a newly hatched turtle know that entering the water won't drown it? Most people answer: . But then why does that same instinct lead some turtles to die in infancy, others in middle age, and others to live a hundred years? The Buddha taught that this natural pattern is real, but that it results from three distinct natures, each with an entirely different goal. These are the wholesome, the unwholesome, and the neutral. Wholesomeness aims for , ease of mind, longevity, and peaceful well-being. Unwholesomeness aims for the opposite — to oppress, to cause hardship and suffering, striving to burn away someone's life. Neutrality aims for neither happiness nor suffering — indifferent to prosperity, yet also not causing harm, simply letting the day drift by aimlessly toward eating, playing, and wandering, finding no substance in anything. These three natures exist within every being, humans and animals alike, each in different proportions in each individual. They direct and pressure us through an inner voice, but they cannot directly command the heart — they must instead invite, urge, and pressure us into being the one who decides, much like a young king surrounded by ministers. The scheming, self-serving ministers represent unwholesomeness, working to destroy the young king through their own hidden agendas; the wise, wholesome ministers guide and protect him, helping him rule with virtue for his own benefit and his people's; and the indulgent courtiers, like eunuchs in the palace, represent neutrality, endlessly entertaining the young king with amusement and leisure, giving him no real foundation at all.

The Tenth Basis of Merit — Right View: The Most Essential Teaching in Buddhism

Someone asks the teacher about the tenth of the orious action (puñña-kiriya-vatthu) — diṭṭhujukamma, "making view straight" — and how to measure correctness when everyone claims their own view is right. The teacher gives the example of the teaching "avoid evil, do good, purify the mind," which existed even before the Buddha's time and sounds correct — yet why does the cycle of birth and death continue endlessly if it's sufficient, with people doing good, ascending to heaven, and then returning as animals? He recounts an actual scriptural story: the Buddha, walking with Ananda, passed a house that kept a pig beneath its floor, and remarked that this pig had once been a Great Brahma god before its rebirth as a pig. This shows that making one's view genuinely correct is the single most essential teaching in Buddhism. The ten bases of merit therefore culminate in this tenth item, which can only be reached after passing through the first nine — requiring adjustment of one's outlook through learning and understanding reality via listening to and discussing Dhamma until it becomes utterly clear. It's comparable to the secular world, where one must study an MBA or similar curriculum to correct one's understanding of how business actually succeeds.

The teacher gives the example of certain religions teaching that waging holy war earns a place beside God — asking whether this view is correct. Is oppressing others in order to dwell with God really correct? What kind of god would want humans to oppress one another for that reward? This clearly shows a mistaken view. We must therefore study and understand each principle of Dhamma; once practiced, the wholesome system overlays itself, bringing energy to correct the elements of Dhamma within us toward cleanliness and purity — an automatic internal process. Giving with a heart of loving-kindness, compassion, and gentleness, accompanied by encouraging words, each carries a different depth of wholesome mind and s overlaid upon it, corresponding to different qualities of celestial body or subtle celestial body. Because outlooks differ by body-level, the refinement differs too, and so does the current of merit and treasure drawn in accordingly.

From a Sphere the Size of an Egg Yolk to Ultimate Perfection

The teacher closes by explaining that repeatedly cultivating the ten bases of merit develops into the ten perfections (barami). Luang Pu once described that when merit grows to full completeness, as large as the sun and moon, it condenses into a sphere of perfection no bigger than an egg yolk. That sphere must then be built up again, cultivated repeatedly until it, too, grows as large as the sun and moon, at which point it refines into "upa-barami," a higher grade of perfection — and refines again into "paramattha-barami," the ultimate perfection. Reaching that full completeness takes an unimaginably long time, spanning even the destruction and reformation of worlds, and still requires further cultivation. Difficult as this is, there is no alternative — we must endure and strive continuously, abiding within the wholesome system.
