The teacher explains why the Bodhisatta needed twenty incalculable eons of perfections, and why the first absorption alone is enough to know the path and its fruit, then tells several true stories showing how gratitude is a wholesome sphere that draws in pure energy and moves the sovereign at the center of the merit sphere to provide for us — closing with the teaching on inner versus outer good friends, and how to set the mind before sleep so wholesome Dhamma keeps working even while we rest.

Why the Bodhisatta Needed Twenty Incalculable Eons of Perfections

The teacher opens with a question: why did the teaching "do good, avoid evil, purify the mind," which existed before the Buddha, fail to work — forcing the Bodhisatta to accumulate perfections for twenty incalculable eons and a hundred thousand great eons? It was to discover the truth of why we know good from evil yet still can't restrain ourselves, forcing endless rebirth through the long, unending cycle of saṃsāra — cycling through asura, animal, human, deva, brahma, formless-brahma realms, then back into hell — round and round without end.

The First Absorption Alone Is Enough to Know the Path and Its Fruit

Before his enlightenment, the Bodhisatta studied under Āḷāra Kālāma up to the fourth , then under Uddaka Rāmaputta up to the eighth attainment, but he said, "This isn't it," and had to find his own way, until he attained enlightenment. The Pali canon records the Buddha saying that the first jhāna alone is sufficient to know the path and its fruit — because through the first jhāna alone, we can access , leading onward to the spheres of precepts, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the vision-and- of liberation, reaching bodies such as the mind-made body and the Brahma body, developing toward the Brahma world — because the Brahma body already within us carries the knowledge to purify itself until it merges into one with the Brahma body, entering that realm directly. Further study continues after entering the sphere of through this same first jhāna.

So we need only lighten to develop toward the first jhāna. Cultivating meditation to clear the hindrances and reach the first jhāna is simple — nothing complicated. Just recite "Samma-araham" continuously, hundreds or thousands of times, day and night, for two or three days, or four or five. This is why the Buddha said that attaining the path, fruit, and Nibbāna takes, at the slowest, seven years; at the middling pace, seven months; and at the fastest, seven days.

The Automatic Cascade: From the Sphere of Dhamma to Precepts, Concentration, Wisdom, and Liberation

Once we enter the sphere of Dhamma, we enter an automatic system that continues helping us. Purity cascades in sequence from the sphere of Dhamma to the sphere of precepts, from precepts to concentration, from concentration to wisdom, from wisdom to liberation, purifying it, and onward to the vision-and-knowledge of liberation, purifying that too — the subtler it gets, the more it relies on subtler spheres of Dhamma refining it further, stage by stage. This is recorded in the Pali canon. What matters most is genuine knowledge and understanding, which gives us confidence and conviction that this method truly works.

Doubt as a Hindrance: Why Practice Stalls

Without enough confidence, doubt — a hindrance the demeritorious side uses as a tool — takes hold. After a while, an inner voice suggests it's probably not working; we've been holding the crystal-ball image for so long with no result, better switch to a Buddha image. After a while with that, the voice again suggests it's not working, better try breath-following instead. Without knowledge and understanding, confidence never forms, and progress in practice simply stalls.

The Three Natures in the Pali Canon: Why Buddhists Rarely Know Them

The core point is that the system of the three natures is something Buddhists rarely know or understand, even though it is the single most essential matter in Buddhism. It's recorded, referring routinely to wholesome states, unwholesome states, and neutral states. Ask what "Dhamma" even means, and even the teacher giving the lesson may be stumped — if the teacher doesn't clearly know, how can the student?

The first thing to recognize is that a real nature governs all beings, using feeling, voice, and inner images as its tools to control our minds. The demeritorious side relies mainly on pressure; the neutral side isn't especially harmful, so it's mentioned less. The Pali canon speaks most clearly of and . The unwholesome, the moment it enters, applies pressure first, followed by a voice that feels like our own thought, steering us toward this or that action. If the wholesome proportion is strong at that moment, we can refuse — but the wholesome's counter-move only lasts a flash, a brief flare of clarity, so the unwholesome keeps proposing again and again until it succeeds.

A True Story: A Young Girl Cares for Her Blind Mother Out of Gratitude

The teacher recounts a true story seen on a television program while traveling to Surat Thani province — the story of a nine-year-old girl living with her mother, just the two of them. Her father had been a heavy gambler; the demeritorious proportion in him was so great he lost everything, and the family had to sell their house and land to pay debts. Her two older sisters left for work in Bangkok and never returned. Her father fled the debts and disappeared. Her mother was blind and also had a physical disability. The full burden fell on this nine-year-old girl — helping her mother to the bathroom, putting her to bed. When their land was seized, they had to move into a relative's hut.

Every morning, she had to cook rice and prepare food, still not very skilled at it, borrowing ingredients from neighbors or relatives, feeding her mother before school and putting her to bed, then running to school without eating breakfast herself, saving it for lunch, relying on the free lunch program the school offered to children from poor families. After eating, she'd rush straight home to check on her mother again. While her friends played, she couldn't join them, worried about her mother — hurrying home to cook, wash dishes, then going to a friend's house to do homework, since her own home had no electricity. Whenever her mother fell ill for several days, she'd stay to nurse her, take her to the doctor, tend to her — leaving barely enough time to study for exams. Yet she scored 100% in every subject, astonishing the education inspector who visited the school, unable to find any explanation except that she must simply be a brilliant child.

Gratitude Arises as a Bright Sphere, Drawing In Pure Energy

The teacher explains that ordinary people don't know the real reason, but Buddhism does: this girl stood firmly within the wholesome system through the tool of gratitude — recognizing her mother's kindness and repaying it through devoted care. The sphere of gratitude is a clear, bright, wholesome sphere; once established, it draws pure energy continuously into her, driving the wholesome system to clear away the impurities that obstruct life. These twin spheres of gratitude and reciprocation draw energy in continuously because they can only arise in the mind. As pure energy flows in, the first things refined are the spheres of memory, sight, thought, and knowing, making them clear — see something once, remember it perfectly; experiences are stored in a clear sphere of memory. Whatever she thinks, she thinks like an adult; whatever she understands, she understands like an adult, because her whole chain of elements has become pure. This is why she could answer children's exam questions — basic, uncomplicated logic — with a perfect score: because the spheres she needed to see and know were already pure. The inner knower guides her, explaining things as if the thought were her own. The teacher notes that everyone has this inner knower — no one has simply pointed it out to them.

Earth Devas and Sky Devas Rejoice in Her Merit

Beyond her exam scores, she was chosen to represent her school in sports, crafts, and quiz competitions — teachers insisted it had to be her. The teacher explains: as she ran to school each day after tending her mother, earth devas dwelling in the trees would see the bright light radiating from her merit-element from a distance and raise their hands in reverence, some rejoicing so deeply that, upon receiving the merit from her radiance, they were reborn from earth devas into sky devas, a higher realm. As she reached the school, the resident earth deva would tell its followers, "This is a person of great ." When teachers gathered to select students for competitions, that earth deva would whisper into their minds that this child would win, and the teachers, moved without knowing why, would always choose her. On competition day, the devas would come along to cheer her on, though they wouldn't directly help — because the sovereign at the center of her merit sphere already managed everything on her behalf.

The Sovereign at the Center of the Merit Sphere Finds Her a Benefactor

Everyone carries this same inner being of knowledge and power, just as athletes and musicians who train and train are shaped by the power that overlays them during practice. No one's life is unconnected to the inner being of knowledge and power — we simply don't know it, so we drift through life unaware, even though this helper is always present. As this girl grew from nine to twelve, the merit-element accumulated through her gratitude kept filling, until it reached its full measure. Once full, merit draws in people connected to us by past kamma to become our benefactors — the sovereign at the center of the merit sphere finds a caretaker to look after us.

Around that time, the education inspector who had visited her school told colleagues about her. A wealthy, charitable person happened to hear the story as if it were being spoken right beside him, and felt deeply moved. He traveled to find her, and the moment he saw her, felt as though she were his own daughter. After hearing her whole story, he told her he would fund her education all the way through a bachelor's and even a master's degree, and arranged medical treatment for her mother along with a house and land. A person with no special knowledge or ability whatsoever, possessing only two wholesome qualities — gratitude and reciprocation — was able to lift herself and someone she loved out of suffering and hardship. This is no coincidence; it's an exact process. Once a wholesome sphere is established, it draws in pure energy that drives the wholesome system, clearing im and carrying a person toward and prosperity.

A True Story: A Nephew Who Never Argues with His Parents, Always First in Class

During the teaching, a listener raised his hand to share that most of his family were slow learners, always scoring near the bottom on exams — except for one nephew who always came first. He'd wondered why, but after hearing the teacher, he understood: this nephew differed from the other children in that he always brought a small gift home for his parents whenever he went out, and whenever his parents scolded him, he never argued — he'd listen quietly until they finished, then say something to comfort them, promising not to repeat the mistake, never holding a grudge. The teacher explains this shows a greater proportion of the wholesome nature within this child, which guides him toward what is right and good.

A True Story: A Mother Dog Brings Her Puppies Home Once She Recognizes Kindness

Another listener shared a similar story involving a litter of puppies. While a neighbor's family was away, the mother dog carried her puppies to the fence of the listener's house and nudged them through a gap. Seeing this, the listener assumed the mother dog was simply hungry, so he set out food, intending to eventually return the puppies to their original owner once he got back from a trip to a large temple. But when he brought the bowl of rice, the puppies grew excited, circling the bowl joyfully — then suddenly ran out of the yard back toward their own home. Puzzled that they'd leave without eating, he followed to see the puppies running to their mother, who then led them all back together to eat. The listener wept at the sight. The teacher explains this is a visible image of how, at every joint clogged with dark elements, that darkness sloughs off and the body grows light — an act of giving toward an animal that deeply moves whoever witnesses it, regardless of how much merit the giver personally receives.

A True Story: An Executive Who Avoids Vice and Rises in His Career

The teacher recalls a student who became a senior executive whom even his boss deferred to, saying, "Please don't resign — I'll give you the highest salary I can," reaching a million baht a month, a figure very few people in the country ever earn. The reason everyone deferred to him was his habit of inviting people to sit in meditation, wherever he went. Since his youth, working as a salesman after graduating, he was recruited by a foreign company, and after a while sent to oversee international affairs in Myanmar. When representing the company abroad, local staff would often take visiting executives out to entertainment venues in the evening — but he never once got involved in any of it. Instead, he'd go home, review accounts and reports, and prepare for the next day's meetings with clients and staff. The teacher notes this shows a large proportion of the wholesome system within him, which let him keep himself firmly inside that system; the wholesome side rewarded him with advancement, entrusting him with oversight, auditing, and debt collection across several countries. Through this deep integrity toward himself and his work, his wife once said of him: he isn't a particularly clever man, but he is a man of great merit and goodness — that is his defining trait, a mark of standing firmly within the wholesome system.

Inner and Outer Good Friends: The Teaching to Ānanda

The teacher summarizes that people of right conduct — honest, upright, courteous, fair — are so because the proportion of wholesome nature within them is greater; the inner knower continually holds them to that standard of conduct. Once, the Venerable Ānanda remarked to the Buddha that ship (kalyāṇamittatā) was half of the holy life. The Buddha corrected him: "Not so, Ānanda — good friendship is the whole of the holy life." This means a person's spiritual growth depends on this one factor alone; without it, growth is very difficult. Good friendship exists both outwardly and inwardly — the inner good friend is the wholesome system itself, the inner knower that continually points us toward what is right and good, explaining what should and shouldn't be done, what is cause and what is effect. We must therefore connect with good friends both within ourselves and outside ourselves.

Sleeping "in the Harbor of the Sea": Setting the Mind Before Sleep So Wholesomeness Keeps Working

Our life and the life of Dhamma are one and the same thing — we live either within the wholesome, the unwholesome, or the neutral, because our body and mind never stop drawing in energy. When the wholesome arises, it draws in the pure energy called merit; when the unwholesome arises, it draws in demeritorious energy bringing suffering, harm, and danger; when the neutral arises, it draws in neutral energy to drive its own system. From waking to sleeping, this drawing-in of energy never rests — not even while asleep.

This is why the elder teacher used to say: "My child, sleep in the harbor of the sea." This means setting the mind, before sleep, so the wholesome system takes root — recalling the Triple Gem, recalling the merit we intentionally performed well since the morning, feeling glad about the good we did that day. Merit then flows abundantly, as if a program has been set; once the wholesome takes root, it carries us toward the completed template we've set. That night, we're cared for within the wholesome system, with the current of merit flowing through along with the subtle treasures that stay with us even while we sleep. All it takes is learning and understanding correctly, then putting it to good use.

Practicing meditation carries the same necessity. Simply sitting — eyes open or closed — lets the current of merit flow along with subtle treasures. This pure energy, the merit-element, drives the wholesome system in clearing away the impurities that create problems and obstacles in life. The subtle treasure accumulated at our center has the function of drawing coarse, worldly wealth toward us. The elder grandmother teacher used to say: to become wealthy, you must have subtle treasure; without it, you can't become rich, because you lack the instrument that draws wealth in. To accumulate that subtle treasure, do good deeds — or simply sit still, recalling goodness and the Triple Gem. With this understanding in place, we now move on to learning the procedure for sitting in meditation.
