Only wisdom lets us recognize and protect a wholesome mind — upgraded through listening, reflection, and practice — so that liberation can be applied to clear away the mind's impurities.
Someone asked the teacher to expand on the teaching "the wise protect their mind," drawn from a -for-the-public broadcast.
The nature of the mind is restless, ready to wander anywhere at any moment. Someone who doesn't guard their mind, letting it scatter into unwholesome states, will live a confused and troubled life. We should therefore care for the mind, keeping it clean and pure through practice, so it holds only good images — which will make us proud for as long as we live.
"Jai" (heart/mind) and "jit" (consciousness) are not the same thing. The heart-mind is our possession, alongside the body, with two properties: it is an instrument of knowing (perceiving the world through eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body) and a generator that draws in energy. Whenever one of the three natures — wholesome, unwholesome, or neutral — seizes the heart-mind, that nature's consciousness layers itself in as a body within the body, a feeling within feeling, a mind within mind, a mental object within mental objects — and draws in that nature's own energy to drive our activities.
Only the wise know which kind of mind is worth protecting. Without wisdom, the mind drifts wherever karma takes it. When an unwholesome state possesses the mind, we can recognize it by thoughts that seem to arise on their own — but are actually the thoughts of the possessing body-within-body. Every completed activity gets sealed as a finished "sphere of merit" or "sphere of demerit," stored within the inner sphere of Dhamma, waiting to be placed on the timeline of a future life.
Wisdom comes in three stages: wisdom from listening, wisdom from reflection, and wisdom from meditation (from the inner wise guide). The sphere of wisdom must be continually upgraded with correct so that liberation can draw on it to clear away the mind's impurities — laziness, fear, irritability, and the rest. This sphere of wisdom, in turn, rests on concentration and precepts as its foundation, since precepts give side enough strength to help us.
Recalling images or sounds of goodness — whether our own or someone else's — draws in pure energy every time. The wise must therefore watch over every incoming thought, checking whether it is right and fitting, in order to protect as much of a wholesome mind as possible.
