Pra Ajarn explains that losing money to a scam is the inescapable repayment of past unwholesome karma. Without that karmic debt attached, no scammer's deception could take hold. He advises seeing the lost money as debt repaid, and recommends generosity, precepts, and meditation to lighten the burden.
Someone asked why Thailand is currently seeing such a surge in call-center scams, with so many people losing large sums of money — what lies behind this, and how one should guard against it.
Being Deceived Is the Result of Past Unwholesome Karma
If there is karmic debt, it must be faced — there will be loss, there will be misfortune, because that sphere of misfortune, that sphere of demerit, genuinely exists. It comes from having once deceived or wronged others in the past, and it all accumulates together. It's strange, really — if there were no such debt, no matter what someone said to us, we simply wouldn't believe them. But when someone calls with a particular story, we somehow fail to catch on in time. It's the demerit within us working together with the demerit of another person — a time bomb already set within our completed sphere of , being triggered. There's no way to avoid it. We're compelled to believe, compelled to comply, compelled to lose — because that sphere of misfortune forces it to happen. When the moment for payment comes, payment must be made.
If we view paying this money as better than facing something far heavier, then at most we've only lost money — not our health, not our mobility, not our life. Our home still stands, hasn't burned down; we still have this and that. At the very least, it's only savings that were lost. If we've never carried this kind of karmic debt, never deceived or wronged others — or did so once but have already repaid it — then this result simply won't happen to us. But if we once wronged someone, then when the time to repay comes, we must repay it. It's just like owing a debt — we have to pay it back.
What's the Real Difference Between Money Kept Safe and Money Lost?
Once the money has been taken, think of it as debt repaid. When karmic consequence is triggered, this is simply the result unfolding. At least it's better than a fire, an accident, or a serious injury — we can still eat, sleep, and enjoy life. Savings that just sit there are, in truth, like wealth held captive purely for the sake of feeling secure. As long as it's never actually used, it produces no real benefit anyway. Whether lost or not, it wasn't being used, wasn't producing benefit either way. So it helps to think of the money that was lost as debt that has now genuinely been repaid — a karmic debt cleared.
The Background Forces Are Always Watching — Abide in the Wholesome System
If we have cause to face something like this, we can address it through generosity, precepts, and meditation — karma will fade or lighten. This reduces the strength of that sphere of misfortune, turning a heavy loss into a lighter one, and a light one into none at all. The guardian forces behind us will watch over and help ease the burden. Simply abiding within system allows that system to help resolve things for us.
How to Support Someone Close to You Who Has Been Scammed
When someone close to us has lost money this way and feels devastated, we can gently remind them: a debt existed, and it had to be repaid; karmic consequence was triggered, and this is the result unfolding — still better than a fire or a serious accident. Help them see that the difference between money kept untouched and money lost is this: money that's lost has, in effect, already settled the debt, while money kept but never used produces no real benefit either way — the sense of security it offers is, in truth, only an illusion.
